Only 3 NL teams in the top 13.

Has the Cubs six games out of the playoffs.

Add Lester and you're just about there.

Without even accounting for the underselling on Arrieta and any contribution from Bryant (and not especially optimistic projections on the other prospects, though some might argue that 1 win for Javy is just that).

We're going to the @#@ playoffs!

Seriously, though, it's why I get so frustrated when people (fans and journalists, primarily) talk about throwing another year away if you don't find "the right deal."

STFU, throwing away a year of this payroll flexibility and the cost control on our position player base would be incredibly dumb, idiots. It's not like David Price is going to sign for 60/5 or something.

I like dark side David, it's good that you rebooted.

We're just in a much different place now.

You're forgetting waiver claims.

Arismendy Alcantara led off Wednesday's game with a home run for Licey and finished 3-for-4 in his 3rd straight start in CF. #Cubs #DWL

My favorite #40man story: Nov. 2002. Red Sox fax us 40-man roster, has just 28 guys on it. I decided to email new GM, Theo Epstein ...

"Mr. Epstein, just want to make sure this is your final roster, only 28 guys on it." Brand-new GM's reply was simple: "Who needs 40?"

I'm becoming irrationally convinced that we have a good baseball team on our hands for 2015 regardless of whether we land a super-big offseason or not.

There's just so much talent working it's way on to the roster.

Just learned a funny thing about Jordan Zimmermann: He was the compensation pick received by the Nationals due to Soriano being signed by the Cubs.

No kidding.

Yeah, that was a very entertaining grantland article: http://grantland.com/features/mlb-transaction-trees/

I love this kind of stuff. I'd love to see a similar article on the NBA.

I want to say I've seen something similar before for the NBA, might even have been a Grantland/Simmons article.

I might have to Google it. I know, for example, that you can trace the draft pick the Bulls used on Joakim Noah all the way back Kelvin Ransey, drafted in 1980 and immediately traded to Portland for Ronnie Lester and a 1981 1st round draft pick (the immortal, Al Wood).

Hmmm. I know Noah, Taj, and McDermott trace their roots to the Curry trade. I guess Antonio Davis was also sent in the same trade. So Davis to Jalen Rose to Artest to... Pippen(?)... Gets us to 1987.

Hoyer on with Levine:

-Nice things about Lester and his background but the story is only worth so much. Really comes down to how

-Idea that dominos have to fall is wrong. They've spent a long time looking at free agents and trade pieces. Could take a long time. Still early in the process.

-Need to add pitching, need to add OBP.

-Versatility they have is exciting. Have the perfect manager to exploit that and move guys around the diamond. Something he likes to do. Getting everyone in the mindset that they might move around the order and field. Can be a huge advantage to get through injuries, etc.

-Maddon has made some phone calls during FA process like any manager would. His hire hasn't really changed the plan. With versatility it makes them more comfortable now because he's a guy who likes to do that.

-Things seem to happen quicker at winter meetings. Important not to get caught up in craziness, talk about not changing their process based on 4 days there.
