Harold Reynolds was exactly right. I'm [expletive] scared.

and then after two years of people screaming at him from the dugout to swing the bat and not look at so many pitches he'd be broken like everyone else we drafted. let's all be thankful for the greatness of 2008 and not read into anything else.

Yeah, looking back at all the guys we could've had who have gone on to great productive careers, I can't help but wonder if they'd have those careers coming up through one of the worst player development systems in the league

Anaheim is not exactly a forward thinking franchise are they? I think Trout would have been just fine moving through Chicago's system.

Yeah, someone with Trout's talent still would have broken through. I don't think guys like Pie or Patterson would have made it even with the current FO in place.

Part of me thinks Patterson was fine until Dusty decided to try to transform him into a slappy leadoff man.

I can't stand Dusty, but if that's all it took to break Patterson then he was never going to be what we hoped he would be.

But what he was in 2003 and 2004 (and 2006) was plenty good.

I'm not sure what happened in 2007, but his K rate went down to 12% and his power also took a dive so I'm guessing he tried going even harder in the slappy direction.

Right, and that he couldn't maintain that success shows to me it wasn't meant to be. He got plenty of chances and showed flashes and had success post-Dusty but still couldn't stick. Are we really blaming all of that on Dusty?

I mean, he was with Dusty again when his career ended once and for all. And his K rate and power dropped in a way that would seem to be a decent indicator of an attempt to drastically change his approach.

Either way, he absolutely did make it and given a better development system and MLB coaching I don't see why it isn't fair to speculate that he would've had a better career, especially since he was so far on the other end of that in actuality.

I thought we were talking in the context of what was expected of guys like Patterson and Pie, not just technically "making it." I agree to a point in that I think if the current FO had their hands on Patterson he probably would have had a better shot of being a useful everyday player, but I still don't think he would have hit the levels everyone was hoping/expecting of him.

And was is this "he was with Dusty when his career ended?" He played another 239 games after that in majors, including a decent year in a part time role for the Orioles in 2010.

It was an extremely poorly worded way of saying when he stopped being any good once and for all. My bad.

Great interview. I loved the Manny story but my favorite part was Bryant talking about his approach. "The ball in the air is where the hits are... something like 89% of balls hit on the ground in the big leagues are outs."

It just came across as thoughtful.

I'm also almost positive it's wrong.

Hey, I didn't say it was correct. But he's optimizing to what he thinks is a fact. :D

100% of balls hit out of the park are HRs

Thanks for posting this, really enjoyed it.

Well, since ground balls have a higher BABIP than fly balls, and 6.4% of balls hit on the ground that don't even leave the infield are hits...

But, yes, continue thinking that, Kris, if it means you continue to hit baseballs really, really far instead.
