As a Cubs fan, I’m thrilled that there’s a smart dude in place to do it; and, at the same time, I can’t imagine folks being crazy enough to want his job.

Oh shut the [expletive] up Brett.

Looks like he'll be on again, this time on ESPN1000.

On @ 2: #Cubs prez Theo Epstein leads off the show @ 2pm. Sign Samardzija? #USA soccer's BIG win. Lebron's landing spot. Would you rather.

Samardzija and Hammel identical pitcher WAR (2.0), Hammel walking fewer striking out more. Arguably best 1-2 punch in NL thus far. #Cubs

So am I being pessimistic that my takeaways from that are we won't be signing a top SP free agent this coming offseason and we still have no money for a couple more years?

If you are, you're not alone.

A little? My read was that it's unclear how that applies to this offseason's FA(partially because of Shark maybe?), but it certainly didn't do anything to change my mind that they won't be going after Scherzer/Lester. There's quite a few players between Scherzer/Lester and the 1 year Feldman/Hammel deals though, and Shark definitely will have an impact on if/how they pursue those guys.

As for the finances, I take that to mean the amount available to spend(100 million, give or take) is not going up this offseason, which isn't much of a surprise. That's not the same as 'we still have no money' since to reach that threshold they'd have to spend quite a bit.

It seems that things are setting up for 2015-16 offseason for the money spending

That's been pretty obvious for at least 6 months now, although there's still a chunk of the fanbase in denial.

I see what you're saying, but I also can't imagine them going into next year with a $50-60 million dollar payroll, either.

I think they'll look to poach this offseason anything youngish with long-term value that they can. But they'll be buying with an eye toward the 2016 season and the knowledge that they can afford to wait until that offseason, even if it's not ideal.

Was anybody really expecting them to sign a top SP free agent? I mean, that seems obvious to me. A lot of people are obsessing over the perceived need for an ace, but the gameplan seems to me to field a competent pitching staff and then eventually overwhelm with offense. They've done alright picking and choosing arms, but have failed miserably with offense, so they are waiting for the draft picks (and will hopefully sign one or two bats as well).

Well no, but not increasing this years payroll where they supposedly rolled over funds from seems a very real possibility

i just want two guys who can be average or better OF bats and for them to work their magic on an SP or two (depending on what happens with shark).

i feel like a broken record but just going from the depths of awful that we have in the OF to average would help this team so much.

Well one of the spots is probably going to be awful for a month whip they pretend Bryant needs to play at AAA for a month. I guess what Lake does the rest of the way determines how many more awful spots we have

I really wonder what their plans are for Alcantara, both in position and in terms of when he might be ready. There's already been a tiny indication that they won't be keeping him down to game his service time, so if they see him as next year's Bonifacio, then you can much more easily absorb the blow of keeping Bryant down for a month by putting him at 2B and Valbuena at 3B. The Sweeney/Ruggiano platoon can backfill the OF spot(assuming Lake and an external OF are the other two) and there aren't any Barney/Baker-esque holes. The return for Hammel could play a role there as well.

I don't expect a 100+ mill type(unless Shark is extended) but I definitely think a Lester 5/80 type guy is feasible, even if we DO extend Shark.

We've got plenty of cheap youngsters, Hoyer has mentioned adding veterans....Based on team needs and what's available, SP and OF are the likely spots. Keep Shark, add Lester and Markakis. Payroll is still in same area it is now.

I don't think Lester is a Lester 5/80 type guy

More?

Edit: Nevermind, for some reason I thought Lester was 32, not 30. He'll break 100 mill easily.
