Look at it this way: they want to sign Tanaka, they fail to sign to Tanaka. It really sucks, but at the end of it they're still in the same position when they started. Trading for someone like Stanton and then not re-signing him clearly puts them in a much worse spot than where they started, so why in God's name do you think they would do that unless they essentially had a guarantee from the Ricketts that they'd be able to throw all of the money at him to keep him?

Let's play "2013 or 2014," where you take a storyline and try to decide whether it matches with the 2013 Cubs or the 2014 Cubs.

a) The team has a terrible record but peripherals indicate it might be .500ish.

b) That probably won't matter much longer because the team is looking to dismantle as the trade deadline approaches, including looking for a monstrous haul for the TOR pitcher they probably don't plan on extending.

c) Speculation swirls over what the Cubs will do with their top-5 pick. The majority of the top guys are pitchers, but a hitter seems like a possibility.

d) The Cubs plan to start the expansion of Wrigley Field very soon, as long as a few minor hurdles are overcome.

e) Our RH slugging prospect is doing mean, mean things to Southern League pitching, but the K-rate is a bit elevated and might be a concern.

f) The Cubs have a lot of money coming off the books in the upcoming offseason. and much speculation occurs on how will they use it to make a big splash?

You don't make the trade without an extension in place. next question?

I have to agree. It would be nice to say that Ricketts will throw everything at him to keep him but it doesn't mean he'll take our offer.

At 26 Stanton will be the next one that is talked about getting to the 300 mil level.

If we offer 320 for 10 years and the Yankees offer 300 for 10, do you think he'll stay for an extra 2 mil a year at that point?

If we do have an extension in hand, then it makes perfect sense to go for it.

Like Tim said we are hoping that Baez or Bryant become what Stanton is, So if you want to throw in the caveat that we trade for him and sign him long term, it ends the argument.

My argument simply was that it doesn't make sense because we probably can't sign him long term. So we are trading for 2 years of improved play, not a long term part.

Unfortunately, I think that is probably the case in reality.

You are like a walking aneurysm.

In this hypothetical trade, it is unlikely the Cubs would part with what it would take to get him unless he came with an extension or, at the very least, that they were sure they had the money needed to throw at him. How do you not see this.

I don't know, I would strongly consider trading the farm for him and then letting him walk after making a qualifying offer. It will give the Cubs a chance to do this whole rebuild thing over again. It's fun.

Don't worry, that's not true. The stuff like the pink bats are but there's no indication this is

Barney has pink shoes up there with a note under duties and taxes saying all proceeds go to charity, no such note for this embarrassment

The one STL game on the road is the only one so far I think, so no?

The entire MLB Auctions website is for charity. Not every item individually states it, tho maybe it should.

Do you have a link to that? I see nothing online saying as much and the site has 3rd party vendors peddling their stuff on it

Id forgive PTR entirely for his wreck of his first half decade as owner if Bryant & Baez hit their potential to become Allstars, Rizzo & Castro hit their potential and Ricketts opens up the pocket books to sign Stanton in two years outright without trading that talent.

What team would give up the insane haul it would take to land Stanton without it being all but a sure thing that they could lock him up?

None of them. The sooner that we accept that Stanton is going to be a Cardinal, the better.

Baez and Bryant are going to hit back-to-back HRs to tie the game in the top of the 9th in St. Louis in game 7 of the 2017 NLCS, and Cardinals fans are going to applaud them because they appreciate the historic moment. Then Stanton walks off in the bottom to reward them for being the best fans in baseball.
