He knows that and by getting the Cubs to release him he gets the best of both worlds (keeps the $2M and gets to try and find another deal).

Regardless of what happens, he won't make more than $2M this season. Whether he stays in Des Moines, comes to Chicago, or ends up elsewhere he will still be trying to find a new deal this offseason.

The Cubs just need to realize that the Stewart signing and re-signing was a mistake and release him.

Who plays third against righties if Valbuena gets hurt?

By keeping him, he's added depth for the team if something happens. If you release him, you've got nothing. So, unless you feel he's just that much of an embarrassment or distraction, what is to be gained by cutting him?

He wants to have his cake and eat it too (I still don't really understand that expression, but anyway).

Once you've eaten it you no longer "have" it.

Yeah. He wants to have his cake and eat it too (I still don't really understand that expression, but anyway).

You can either possess your cake or you can consume the cake, but after you consume it you no longer possess it.

What if I eat half of it?

Then you have half a cake.

They should call him up just for the awkwardness that would ensue between Stewart and Sveum. Once he apologizes to Sveum, send him down the next day and force him to make the same decision again (elect FA or go to the minors).

Nobody eats half a cake. If you're the kind of diabeetus-in-training that eats half a cake, you're finishing it off.

Good point.

They should just act as professionally as possible from this point forward.

You don't want to let a player weasel out of his contractual obligations, but you don't want to to gain a reputation as an organization that will F with players out of spite.

That doesn't make it any less reasonable to want to play in the big leagues. He's just been going about things the wrong way.

You can't blame him for being frustrated, just that it's been misdirected. If not for injury, he would have likely started the season as our 3B. By the time he was ready, Valbuena had earned the job fair and square.

Who knows what's been going on behind the scenes since as far as attempts to trade him, but between his struggles both on field and with management, nobody's willing to give up anything worthwhile in terms of players or cash. If he were outright cut, somebody would likely pick him up for league minimum, even after this fiasco. My hunch is that they've been trying to work something out in which they part ways without having to pay him his entire salary, but they havn't been able to come to an agreement which satisfies both sides.

This being said, he may not be 100% at fault here. However, his Twitter ranting vs. the front office's well thought out statements make him look like a disrespectful goof and makes them look like they're reluctantly carrying out team policy.

??? you have to be [expletive] kidding me with this nonsense. He isn't with the big league club because when healthy he's been absolute [expletive] @ AAA. He seemingling can't grasp this and shits all over the Cubs FO on twitter. Not 100% at fault?

I'm referring to whatever's gone on behind close doors regarding the personal battles with management and failure to amicably part ways. Nothing else.

@sahadevsharma: Talked to Rowson about @r_j_anderson's Castro article on @baseballpro. He basically said Castro's a naturally aggressive hitter (more)

@sahadevsharma: He's being more selective with 0 or 1 strikes (like the article said), but getting it down w/ 2 strikes is just another part of this process

@sahadevsharma: Rowson couldn't say enough about how much he believes in Castro & how Castro is working so hard to become the player they know he can be

@sahadevsharma: Rowson wouldn't say that refining Castro's 2-strike approach was final step in process, but did admit it was something Castro's working on

@sahadevsharma: My opinion: This is worst stretch I've ever seen Castro in, but I believe it's a combo of bad luck & struggles due to working on adjustments

@sahadevsharma: In the long run, I still believe he'll come out of this a better player than he was coming into last season.

How has the Cubs front office, in any way persecuted Stewart? What personal battles are you 'referring' to?

Nobody's persecuting anyone. My assumption is that there have been discussions about a split for some time now and both sides are having problems coming to agreement.

At this point, it's clear that the relationship is at an end, and it's simply unfair on their part not to let him go. On the other hand, it's unrealistic on his part to feel as though they should let him go and pay all or even most of his salary. By now, even if teams are intersted in him they're not going to part with anything of remote value.

It's kind of like a miserable married couple staying together for the kids; in this case, there are 2 million of them.

That is absurd.

If it is unrealistic for him to feel as though they should let him go, how can it possibly be unfair of them not to let him go?
