I don't have a problem putting them in the haven't worked out category, but to criticize them because they weren't going to contend does not make sense to me.

Same.

I have an issue with signing older guys to massive (think Pujols) commitments when you are going to get the majority of the value in the first 2 or 3 years of a deal and then be paying for that production for years thereafter, but otherwise, criticizing getting good value on guys for now is ridiculous. What the hell else were they going to do with the $5M they saved in 2013 by not signing Fujikawa? Or the $12 or w/e on Jackson?

Then why did you lose your mind last year when the Cubs signed Reed Johnson (for like $1 million) on the theory that signing reserve outfielders was a complete waste of money on a team that wasn't going to contend?

(I'll remind you that Johnson helped them get Arodys)

Well, there are 25 roster spots available, and the team already had too many mediocre players taking up space on the roster. My preference is for good baseball players on the roster.

But that's just me.

Let's talk about Castro. Why does he suck? How much does he suck? More importantly, how can the people who understand baseball stats so much better than I do explain this to make me not want to steal Tree's forehead heroin needle?

I'm just hoping that what we're seeing is a byproduct of him working on things, specifically his approach. Progress isn't linear and all that.

Like I said before, that's what I keep telling myself. It kinda needs to be true.

I think you're going to need his heroin needle. I can't imagine there is a way to explain his season so far other than to say it's horribly disappointing and that he sucks. But I'm willing to listen if anybody has anything.

lol

Just to clarify, I mean he sucks this year. I am hoping beyond hope that he doesn't actually suck every season for the rest of his career.

Well then your response was pointless, because it was already acknowledged he sucks this year, and the reference to needing heroin was about whether he will suck for the rest of his career or if it's just a minor setback along the way. Stating he will need the heroin clearly indicates you think he will continue to suck.

Sveum keeps insisting that Cubs pitchers aren't sticking to the scouting reports and game plans in key situations, including Pujols' home run last night.

Very odd.

Yeesh:

Sun-Times[/url]"]It was also yet another case of manager Dale Sveum left chapped after the game by a pitcher and/or catcher freelancing away from the game plan and burning the team.

"We were not supposed to be even close to calling or throwing that pitch against him," Sveum said. "Somewhere along the line, you lose the scouting report between the bullpen and the mound."

last i looked a few days ago, he'd just missed on a few HRs and underperformed his xbabip a little bit to where assuming neutral or slightly positive batted ball fortunes he'd be performing right at his career averages

i'd say i'm 'concerned', but not yet 'worried'; i'd obviously preferred that this would be a year he'd make another step forward and that hasn't happened, but sometimes that happens more abruptly for a player than gradual improvements

That kind of airing inside stuff is what irks me the most about him. If its true do something, but don't go whining to the media. It makes him look bad for several reasons, not the least of which, he doesn't have control.

I know I'm in the minority but I really can't stand him.

All he has to do is start calling pitches from the dugout.

I agree with the sentiment that him bringing this to the media is weak. It's like a football coach saying that if the players simply executed his brilliant schemes better they would win. If guys are disregarding your scouting reports, then you have a problem on your hands that needs to be solved.

But I really don't get the "can't stand him" mentality. My issues with Sveum pale in comparison to past issues with managers.

It's irrational. To me he's seemed like an arrogant prick from day one. I also want to mention that a lot of teams are doing the defensive shift stuff, that hardly makes him unique.

I'm beginning to understand why all the references to Stewart over the last 12 months by the management have been so pointed.

Then why did we re-sign him?

Some combination of still liking his ability, the garbage 3B market, lack of faith in Valbuena and Vitters, etc.

In sports, especially baseball where you're stats pretty much tell the story. How can you blame other people for things?

You know Ian, you could have refused assignment and forfeited the rest of your 2 mill guarantee.

Yea, if I'm making 2 mill with no pressure I'm not bitching. He's behaving like the typical spoiled athlete.

I don't know why the Cubs wasted a pick on Bryant when they have Stewart waiting to be called up.
