Purdue lands Jacquil Taylor a desperately needed big man if Hammons leaves after this year.

Still have 3 scholarships to give in 2014 if wanted. My guess is they bank them for 15'.

Ronnie Harrel! {Evil grin}

Yeah after looking at the Creighton recruiting classes for 2012 and 2013 I can see why he picked Creighton. Playing time! Why isn't he listed as a commit on Rivals? Seriously though, he would've been a nice player to have.

Hopefully they dump the head coach instead.

Donnie Hale is leaving Purdue as well. That's the 4th player with eligibility to leave this offseason.

I've been out of the loop on Purdue basketball stuff for awhile, but who are the other 3?

Marcius to DePaul, Lawson to Appalachian State, Anthony Johnson to Northern Illinois

I didn't even know about Lawson. Jay Simpson should be able to jump into his spot, but it sucks to see Lawson out. I liked Hale too.

I've always been a big fan of Painter's, but at what point to you start to question what's going on. I would rather not believe that Painter is forcing players out, but that is a lot of players transfering.

Wow, what a bust Anthony Johnson has become. Was never impressed with what I saw out of him at Whitney Young. He looks like he's eleven years old.

This turning into something of a disaster for UCLA, isn't it?

I cannot believe they hired Steve Alford in 2013. 1999, maybe.

Neither can I, it was pretty shocking.

And I think Alford is going to regret it, too. He had a pretty good thing going in at UNM. All he had to do was keep the Lobos relevant and he'd have been in a pretty good place. I have a feeling his name is going to mud (all right, muddier) by the time he's done at UCLA.

But yeah, UCLA isn't a school that needs to be hiring Steve [expletive] Alford.

It's going to be rough on his kid too, especially if he is really going to play him at point guard. The whole thing is probably going to end up being a train wreck.

No way he's forcing kids out with 2 open scholarships this year and 3 for 14' / 15'. Marcius moved on because he wants to start somewhere to try to prove himself for a playing career in Europe. Hale never added the weight and wasn't physical enough to be a B1G player. Lawson was a freak athlete but fouled everything that moved and had no polish on the offensive end. Anthony Johnson, I don't know what happened there, he was getting minutes but never developed accuracy on his outside shooting. He had mental lapses and would just drive to the hoop and throw up tear drop shots. He was probably tired of Painter screaming at him for not making adjustments. AJ claims he moved to be closer to his sick grandma.

2009 - 2011 were abysmal recruiting years with the exceptions of DJ Byrd who was a really good role player and Terone Johnson who is a senior captain this year. All that being said, Painter (depending on the recruiting service) brought in 4 4-star players in 2012 and 3 more this year. He's got more 4 star players on the roster this year than ever before. He's also got a solid class of guys that fit his system in 2014. He's obviously trying to land a 5 star player but if he can continue to land 4 stars regularly they'll be fine. Purdue has never been a 5 star player school.

He just has to avoid terrible stretches like 2009-2011.

I never expected him to land 5 star talent, at least until he made a Final Four. But I agree, he doesn't need a top tier talent. He needs near top tier talent that will buy into his system. He proved that with the big three.

I was looking forward to this because of the high upside freshman and the depth. I guess there's still the high upside freshman.

Assuming Hammons doesn't leave, in 2014 they'll have 3 Juniors, 4 Sophomores, and 3 + Freshmen. This is still a really young team and the 3 Juniors will be 3 year starters next year. My hopes for this year are a top half B1G finish and getting back to the tournament. My hopes for 2014 are significantly higher. If Hammons stays, a shot at the B1G title and a good tournament run.

Even worse than my extremely low expectations thus far.

Dan Guerrero is just an awful AD.

It was pretty surprising to see a school of UCLA's caliber take a shot at Steve. I wouldn't have been surprised if a lower tiered major conference school took a shot on him and I wouldn't have been too surprised if he would have been decent (still could be honestly) but he's not going to put them at the level that UCLA wants and it's looking like it could be worse than that. Plus he's a piece of [expletive] so that doesn't help things.

That much is becoming quite clear. I mean it's UCLA, why all the settling for mediocrity? The more time passes since the school was elite, the less weight the name will carry with potential recruits.

While I agree, in the last 8 years they produced 3 Final Fours and produced 2 of the top 10 players in the NBA. They aren't what they were, but I don't think anyone can be that now.

Well no, obviously no one is going to be the Wooden era Bruins, but UCLA is a program that should be on the Duke/UK/Kansas level far more often than not. It just seems like it's been hit and mostly miss lately. And like the elites, they should be poaching the top coaches/coaching prospects in the sport, not hiring guys like Steve mf'ing Alford.

Yeah agreed. Although this latest group of guys that seem to be elite are strange. Wanting to stay at Butler, VCU, and Wichita State rather than going to a blue blood. I still would have went another route besides Alford though.

3 Final Fours, not 8.

Yeah, the most notable of the recent "up and coming" coaches (Stevens/Smart) were odd in that regard, but Alford is a reclamation project at best and a complete waste of time and resources at worst. He had his shot at Iowa and came away from that looking like a failure and a scumbag.

presumed OSU lean 5-star PF Goodluck Okonoboh picked UNLV

mostly i wanted to point out that somebody with the name Goodluck Okonoboh exists, which is awesome

Nobody wants to play out west. Late games, no audience, less fanfare, less hype, less interest.
