I believe Wandy is the highest paid player for two teams at one time. I wonder how often that has happened.

It's probably just victory drunkenness talking, but I'm starting to wonder why I thought the Pirates were better than us. Their lineup is barely better, if at all, and Wandy Rodriguez is their No. 2 pitcher? Their bullpen is better, I guess, but that's not hard.

Time to break out the Platoons! I want to see both Sappelt and Hairston in the outfield.

Yeah I definitely can see us finishing with a better record and I wouldn't be surprised, I too thought/think they are a little better though. I think their lineup is a little deeper (or at least their bad isn't as bad as our bad), they play a little bit better defense, and they do have Cole/Taillon waiting in the wings that could give their rotation a boost over ours. Yeah the bullpen is a definite edge, but as you said that can change pretty quickly year-to-year. I think them and us as if both rosters stay about the same throughout the year without big injuries/trades are 75 win teams +/- 5.

He is and it's pretty awesome. Houston is paying him $5M and the next highest guy is Bud Norris at $3M. Pittsburgh is paying him the remaining $8.5M and while Burnett is making $16.5M, the Yankees are paying him $8.5M so Pittsburgh is only on the hook for $8M.

I don't remember the Cubs having gone 2-0 since I've been a Cubs fan so I decided to look it up.

They haven't gone 2-0 to start a season since 1995. Not that it really matters over the course of 162 games but that just seems strange.

It's close. He's second on our team to AJ, but with the Yankees paying some of AJ's salary and the 'Stros paying some of Wandy's both are being paid $8 million, which would be tied for second to Russell Martin's $8.5 million.

$2m of Martin's $8.5m for this year is considered a signing bonus (He got the money up front), so, technically, on some level, he is the highest paid player for two teams.

Cole will be up in June, Taillon next year.

It's going to be tough having one of my favorite college players of all time play for a divisional rival.

Scott Hairston should earn his contract tomorrow.

it's a nice relief to not have 1/3 of the lineup be forfeit territory against LHPs

Hairston, Sappelt, Castillo, Castro should feast on them; hopefully Rizzo can improve to semi-competent

and HOLY [expletive] HOLY [expletive] DeJesus slugged .149 (!!) last year against lefties

I'm still a little worried that DeJesus/Sappelt will at least not start as a straight platoon.

My numbers for Wandy might be wrong. There was a piece in the Pittsburgh Post Gazette today that said Wandy is gettin $13m, with $5m paid by the 'Stros, hence the $8m I came up with today. The Article aslo has Martin at $8.5m.

Baseball Prospectus has the Pirates paying Wandy $8.5m, AJ $8m, Martin $7.5m

ETA: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/compensation/index.php?team=PIT&cyear=2013

Looks like it depends how you do the signing bonus. Martin is at 6.5M in 2013 and 8.5M in 2014 with a 2M bonus. Averaging it out puts it at 7.5/9.5 versus lumping it all in 2013 which puts his salary at 8.5 each year.

I'm worried that we're giving Schierholtz a chance to prove he's an "everyday" player and won't leverage Sappelt effectively.

I usually use Cot's for the numbers, and they have it averaged.

Huh?

Are you forgetting about Hairston?

I'm thinking instead of going Sappelt in CF and Hairston in RF, they'll go Hairston in CF and Schierholtz in RF.
