Team USA has the worst 1B in their group. Discuss.

Why was Hosmer prioritized over Rizzo?

Rizzo had probably already agreed to play for Italy. Had he not, I am guessing he would be playing 1B for USA right now.

Really? He said that he wanted to play for the US.

Exactly. The US didn't ask him. When Tex got hurt, Rizzo was already committed to another team, or else maybe he'd be on USA now.

Japan beat the Netherlands a second time, so Japan will be in the semifinals against the runner up from the USA-DR-PR-Italy group, and the Netherlands will play the winner of the group. The USA-DR winner is in the semis for sure, and the PR-Italy loser is done.

Hoping the US wins the pod so I get to see them at the semifinal game I'm going to on Monday.

So...Maestri and Pugliese are pitching for Italy and shutting down a lineup of MLB hitters for Puerto Rico.

Weird.

Not that I think Pugliese is that good. But I am higher on him than most.

So much for that. Poor Italy

Blew a 4-2 lead going into the 7th last night to lost 5-4

Blew a 3-1 lead going into the 8th tonight to lose 4-3

How long until Rizzo gets back to camp?

So, in the end, I jumped the gun on Pugliese being any good in this game.

I think Italy plays the loser of the US/DR game tomorrow on Saturday then that's their last game regardless of the outcome, again I think that's the case. He'll probably be back in camp no later than Tuesday next week.

Puerto Rico plays the US-DR loser. It's double elimination in this part. Italy and PR both lost yesterday and Italy lost today so they're out. Loser of PR-US/DR is out and the winner is in the semifinals (though there's still another game to determine who wins the pool).

Nobody watching the game.? Rizzo with a bases loaded/clearing triple.

Off a lefty also.

David Wright scratched for Team USA with a sore back. Willie Bloomquist to play third base and bat ninth.

Gross.

Why is Willie Bloomquist even on the team? Did that many guys turn us down or was it a "he's normally a utility guy so he'll be better as a utility guy for us than guys who are better at baseball than him" thing?

Some combination of the two.

Highlights from last night.

Hanley Ramirez got booed every time he came to the plate and was jeered when he got picked off first in the second inning. There was also a nice "Beat LA" chant during his first at bat.

After realizing that the stadium was less than half full, we moved down from the upper deck, ending up about seven rows up from the bullpen down the right field line (it happened to be Netherlands bullpen last night). In the sixth inning, Netherlands has two pitchers warming up and one seems familiar. I look it up and sure enough, it's former Cubs first round pick Mark Pawelek. He didn't get in, probably because he threw five pitches which got away from the catcher while warming up.

Later on, a fan in the first row in front of us picked up a foul ball. When he turned around to sit down, everyone saw that he had a Dodgers hat on, which led to another round of boos and "Dodgers suck" chants.

They also had both World Series trophies on display up near our original seats, so I took a picture of the trophies and sent it to my dad (a Dodger fan).

All in all, it was a good time.

I'm shocked the Marlins have a vocal group of fans that actually care enough to attend an international tournament and boo a former star.

The game was in San Francisco and Hanley was booed because he's on the Dodgers.
