WGN Radio Pres on now. Worked very hard to try to continue the relationship with the Cubs...saying that the current arrangement just doesn't make business sense, as much as they value the relationship...yadda yadda. The Cubs basically wanted more money, and WGN wasn't willing to pay.

Also, one quote said that the Cubs wanted (and got from 780) an upfront cash payment. Fuels the #poortomricketts narrative.

This move makes a lot of sense from WGNs standpoint. Radio stations tend to use a baseball team as a way to build the brand of their station and raise awareness of its location and existence. But WGN has been around forever and probably doesn't see much value in that anymore. They've got a stranglehold on the Baby Boomers that are in to their programming and they have no need to promote to a new generation their old people stuff. They can probably get another 10+ years of loyalty out of their listeners without spending money. Maybe after that they will be interested in renewing the relationship, if baseball still exists on the radio by then.

The WGN radio pres is saying this?

WGN Radio Pres Jimmy DeCastro...Vice President of Content and Programming, Todd Manley...and Tribune President of Broadcast Media, Larry Wert were all on at the same time. I presume it was Larry that said this, but honestly, I'm not 100% who was talking.

@WGNRadio has a lot of tweets summing up what was said, though it skipped that tv comment.

I found these clowns on WGN to be complete idiots. They admitted they were caught flatfooted with the changing media platforms and that had no answer to it. They consistently brought up the number of losses the Cubs have had the last few years and that WGN Radio ratings were nothing in August and September. They mentioned that WBBM will no longer be a news station and thus will allow WGN to provide more news/traffic(which they claim their listeners want) when Cubs games are on. They did mention The Score as a possible landing site for the Cubs after one year. They hinted at the White Sox interest but that's because Reinsdorf owns the Bulls. They said the savings of losing $6M a year on the Cubs will go to keep the talent of Steve Cochran and Orien Samuelson on the air. BS!

My feeling is that both WGN TV/Radio is run like a quaint small-town business. They refuse to adapt to the 21st Century and just don't get it. They would prefer to have a Kapman, Judy and Turdy, Milt Rosenberg(thanks God they finally cut that fossil loose), Dan Roan behind the mic than the Cubs. Fine..enjoy the witness protection program.

Who listens to AM radio anyway? 60 year olds? That is a large dedicated market. Baby boomers have all the money and that's why television ads are littered with catheter, scooter, reverse mortgage, pharmaceutical lawsuits, etc.

There's all kinds of research to dispute that. There's more disposable money in the older market.

Older than 60 year olds?

That's the point. Referring to the station as a dinosaur and irrelevant ignores the fact that they are just giving their target audience what they want. They aren't going to lose the old people that listen everyday, and there's no point in spending huge on the Cubs to theoretically bring in a younger demographic that isn't going to listen to their crop reports.

Crane announcing Cubs move from WGN-AM tomorrow overshadows Theo's draft day. Should've waited a few days. #CraneBeingCrane

Yes, I agree with you. I had initially thought you were saying that radio was all 60 year olds and TV was all "baby boomers."

Okay, I didn't have a good basis to talk about the ads on radio. I know that on the very rare occasions I listen to sports talk in Chicago the ads are often for strip clubs. I assume the ads on WGN radio are similarly targeted at their particular audience.

If WGN Radio aired a strip club ad, there might be 100 heart attacks before it ends. It does trend to an older audience. The WGN Radio officials said they lost Budweiser and Chevy as sponsors because of poor ratings, which is strange because Bud is a big corporate partner to the Cubs and the new signage. So there's interest in tv viewers apparently.

The media market is changing and who knows what platforms will pop up in the next few years. Older people don't use computers/mobile devices to watch content like younger people do, so there's that. And by the way by 2017, half the U. S. population will be 50+.

With new radio deal, will #Cubs ditch "Go Cubs Go" after (rare) wins? "You can catch it all on WGN...."

That might be the best part of this.

And really, who cares. If Ricketts can get more money then I say god bless.

It's not like the Cubs have let the inaccuracy of the song's other lyrics get in the way...

About projecting supreme confidence in the cubs ability to win on that particular day and having the power and speed to be the best team in the national league?

They're gonna keep using it, but badly dub over that part with the other provider, not unlike this:

Not to mention that the correlation between speed and success has not been proven out.

Maybe if they changed it to OBP or something. :)

"They got the slugging and the OBP... to be the best in the major leagues."

Also for a post-victory song it shouldn't be talking about how the "Cubs are gonna win today!", since that already happened.

Maybe they can get Steve Goodman to re-record it?

Too soon?

Yes, I assume they are going to keep Pat and whomever is his sidekick. Same sound different number on the dial. Good for the Cubs.
