Wow, unless his velo comes back, I think Rodon not only makes it to us, but past us.

To be fair to him, he did this last year too and then came back strong (check out the first 5 pages of this thread). Of course he's a pitcher blah blah blah.

Are there any other evaluators in the industry who are questioning Rodon at #1 ? - and if so, what would it take for the Astros to consider someone else there? They seem locked into Rodon - it would be quite the bold move to pick anyone else there it seems.

I haven't found anyone - area guy, cross-checker, director - who's arguing that Rodon is worthy of 1-1 this year, and I don't think the Astros are remotely "locked into" Rodon.

Beede was even worse than Rodon and his control regressed: 2.2 IP, 6 H, 11 R, 5 ER, 5 BB, 2 K.

Brad Zimmer is killing it though. He just might be the #1 college bat in this draft (and Wilken drafted him once before). 5 HR while playing home games in San Francisco...

But it seems like he started last year off great from a stats perspective. Was his velo down then too? I know he had dips last year, but it's yet to go up at all this year, unless I'm missing something.

I'm one of the few here that wants a pitcher, all things being equal this year. Any red flags on Rodon that he can change soon, I'm all for it. But the velo thing is disturbing obviously.

Yes. Sorry to quote myself but this is from page 2:

Rodon started his Thursday start this past weekend 94-96 in the first (his working velocity last season) but was 86-92 the rest of the night. Kiley McDaniel said Trea Turner is definitely ahead of Rodon as a prospect.

Rodon has had a few starts with down velocity and command issues, but this was his first start where he dipped into the mid-80s. Definitely something to watch going forward.

From a stats perspective, he's still currently at a 2.18 ERA and greater than a K per inning for this year. Unearned runs for sure, but many seem to be fairly legitimate unearned runs. NC State had like 4 errors today.

I'm confident he'll be like last year and return to full form, but i'm also starting to view the slow starts he has (stuff) wise as a bigger negative than I was before (as opposed to an excuse). That said, he'd still be really high on my list at #4.

On another note, Hoffman with another bland start. 7 innings, 3R, 2K, 2BB.

Can't find the full statline but Grant Holmes (#5 on Law's rankings) had 15 K's in his most recent start a few days ago. I've got no reasoning behind it other than the eye test, but Holmes and Beede are the two pitchers I feel the best about in terms of health/durability if we go that route.

Kolek is the HS kid with triple digit stuff correct?

I know alot of top HS arms bust but my admittedly hazy memory has been that most were 93 to 97 mph fireballers not the guys with triple digit type heat.

Has there been multiple notable HS guys with a 100mph fastball that were drafted in the top ten that have turned out busts in the last 15 years.

Really the only guys I'm thinking of with legit 100mph fastballs drafted recently were Wood, Beckett, Burnett, and out of college Strasburg & Jonathan Gray.

Not that it makes a huge difference, but I remember Wood being a 97-98 guy. Did he ever hit 100?

Kolek is the one who has hit 100 (though there are unconfirmed reports than Grant Holmes has too). There are way more than that. Off the top of my head, Gerrit Cole, Lucas Giolito (was a top 10 talent), Dylan Bundy hit 100 in HS, Mark Rogers of the Brewers. And the latter three have all had surgery.

@DanMKirby: Kolek, Holmes, Cease, Kopech have all hit btwn/ 98-102 mph. Touki, Ortiz, Aiken, Medeiros, Griffin, Varga btwn/ 95-97. This draft is silly.

A couple more 100 mph'ers off the top of my head:

Alex Meyer

Lance McCullers

Pretty sure Jameson Taillon

Harvey was probably close.

But, there's going to be a difference between some of these guys who "can top out" at 100 every once in awhile vs. a guy like Gray who might sit 97-98 and hit 100 multiple times in a game.

Isn't Touki a strong commit?

Not all Vandy commits are, I don't believe he is (unlike Sheffield and Cease).

Man, it's non-ideal when 3 of the top 4 are HS pitchers. What a bad break.

Still early and Beede could have been dinged by his horrible outing. That said, what do you do with Rodon? If his velo comes back in the second half of the year, is it just his thing at that point? How does that account in his draft position?

Maybe he drops to 4, the Cubs organization thanks their lucky stars, and drafts him immediately.
