2011-2012 LA Kings: 17th in the NHL in Power Play percentage.

2010-2011 Boston Bruins: 20th in the NHL in Power Play percentage.

2009-2010 Chicago Blackhawks: 16th in the NHL in Power Play percentage.

2013 Chicago Blackhawks: 16th in the NHL in Power Play percentage.

We have a really nice thing here. Jesus Christ, enjoy it. It could definitely end abruptly. But this team is fantastic.

It's probably best not to watch these last 3 games if you think that they will be indicative of how things will go in the playoffs or what they mean which is absolutely nothing. Nobody outside of Vancouver cares about the Presidents trophy. Let the Pens have it if that's what happens. The Hawks are the best road team in hockey when they care about the outcome.

These games mean nothing to the Hawks. They've got the #1 spot in the West, and that's great. Now they are just waiting for the playoffs, working on some things, all while generally avoiding getting hurt. The Canucks, on the other hand, were still competing for their division crown (which they have now clinched). Expect more sort of bad/boring/tune-up play against Edmonton and Calgary. Against St. Louis? Neither team will care, most likely.

what are the chances that Toews gets a sniff for MVP?

I saw some Hart rankings article the other day and they had Toews 5th...there was another one (B-R though) that had him 1st, but I don't think there's enough buzz out there for him to win it.

i would disagree about the no buzz thing. crosby is obviously the leader, but it's not like toews is some unknown schmo having a career year. yzerman never won the hart, i think that toews could win based upon the idea that he's the spiritual successor to one of the greatest ever who was robbed of the most prestigious award.

I think the fact that he's at least 50-50 to win the Selke is what hurts his chances of winning the Hart. Just like Ovie won't get the Hart because he's going to win the Rocket Richard.

power play is like the least important thing to focus on for a team that would like to compete for the cup. anecdotaly, this is probably why you often see terrible teams do well on the power play. there is no positive correlation between the strength of pp and the chances of hoisting lord stanley's cup. repeat, there is no positive correlation between the strength of pp and the chances of hoisting lord stanley's cup

things that do correlate well with postseason success? 5V5 strength. so, you know, that thing the 2012-2013 blackhawks are amazing at

the focus on strength of power play conveys a deep misunderstanding on what actually leads to winning hockey games

and like quenneville said after last night's game; throw it in the garbage, it means nothing

Posted

furthermore, the blackhawks are 3rd in the league in 4V5 +/-. being good with one less guy on the ice is a pretty badass place to be

but yeah let's poo poo this team cause ARGH SHOOT DA PUCK

Plus I think him and Kane actually split the Blackhawks vote.

Pittsburgh's loss last night should have pretty much wrapped up the President's Trophy. Yay? Whatever.

It appears that the first round is either going to be Detroit, or Columbus. Who would you guys rather see? While I think Detroit is the better team, I see what Bobrovsky is doing in Columbus and have flashes of Mike Smith from last year. If you take the goalies out of the equation, Detroit is tougher, but I think I'd rather see 5-7 goals a game (combined) against them than a bunch of 2-1 games against Columbus. Makes luck (slash hot goaltending) less of a factor. Plus, it would be nice to knock Detroit out on this Cup run.

Hopefully we get to see Leblanc at some point. I know Bolland's hurt, but we need to see if he is going to be a factor come playoff time (although I suppose we're good enough that he can still heat up in the first round). Rest whoever wants a rest....maybe even give Saad a breather. He's already coming up on 80 games played this season when you factor in the Rockford games...easily a career high. Showing no signs of slowing down, but don't him to hit a wall. Same could go for Leddy.

That's the main point. People were talking about Kane as MVP, or at least a runner-up type candidate, for most of the season.

That (Kane) talk has pretty well dried up lately though.

Blues GM:

“I don’t want to play Chicago right now,” he told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “Other than that, we’re going to be ready to take on whoever has to come.

“Chicago is the one team that from start to finish has put a three-month distance between itself and the rest of the pack. Anything else in the conference is nothing more than a mild upset.”

3 years ago today:

i was listening in Brazil

If I'm being honest, my Hawks fandom really began at that game. I watched games occasionally before that, but I was a full on bandwagoner after that, and have really stuck to it.

Just was watching some highlights from game 6 of that series. I'd forgotten about the weird goal from center ice of Kane's foot.

I'm so over this Keith controversy with the broad reporter. She was trolling him and he knew it. I love our Canadian friends but they take PC to a whole new level.
