famous last words lol

no seriously though, you look at that schedule and you wonder how used to crap teams the hawks are going to be when they hit the playoffs. mainly because this team is so awesome you have to invent things to worry about

The Hawks have also played the 2nd toughest SOS so far this year which is amazing because I think it accounts for teams going 3-14 against us. The only team with a tougher SOS so far is San Jose, and that's weighted by playing us 3 times already.

Hawks came out flat tonight.

Side note how does the NHL draft work compared to the Other sports? Is it similar to MLB on terms of development?

It's similar but first-rounders are more likely to start right away in the league.

So looking at the Hawks first rounders over the years, have they been unlucky or what?

Only the very top picks are likely to make an immediate impact, and most picks take some seasoning -- particularly defensemen. Of late, the Hawks have drafted very well. Home grown players include:

Duncan Keith (2nd -- 2002)

Brent Seabrook (1st -- 2003)

Corey Crawford (2nd -- 2003)

Brian Bickell (2nd -- 2004)

Dave Bolland (2nd -- 2004)

Niklas Hjalmarsson (4th --2005)

Jonathan Toews (1st -- 2006)

Patrick Kane (1st -- 2007)

Marcus Kruger (5th -- 2009)

Brandon Bollig (signed to an amateur try-out -- 2010)

Andrew Shaw (5th -- 2011)

Brandon Saad (2nd -- 2011)

12 of 24 players were drafted/signed by the Hawks. 4 were acquired via trade (Frolik, Stalberg, Leddy, Oduya). 8 were signed as free agents (Carcillo, Hossa, Mayers, Brookbank, Montador, Rozsival, Emery).

#1 Picks

2012 -- Teuvo Teravainen. Widely regarded as a steal for the Hawks, he's currently playing center at Jokerit in Finland. Did well in the Worlds, and has a high ceiling.

2011 -- Mark McNeill. Playing at Prince Albert in the WHL, where he is the #1 center. Regarded as a potential #2 center/power forward. He played in Rockford last year after his junior season. He'll go back to Rockford and could be rewarded with a Black Ace role in the playoffs.

2011 -- Phillip Danault. Another center, Danault is in his final year of juniors, where he is Victoriaville's Captain and a leading scorer. Could crack the roster next year, but likely Rockford -- and he'll go there after his junior season ends, as well.

2010 -- Kevin Hayes. A junior at BC, it remains to be seen whether he can use his size to advantage and if his skating improves enough to translate.

2009 -- Dylan Olsen. Cracked the roster last year when injuries were a problem; played tolerably well 3rd pairing minutes. He could be on several NHL rosters today, and is part of the great depth on D for this season.

2008 -- Kyle Beach. Likely a bust. A headcase who's been in Rockford for some time and has been passed on the depth chart by players like Brandon Saad and probably Jeremy Morin. I think he's gone after this year.

2007 -- Patrick Kane. Umm...

2006 -- Jonathan Toews. Yeah...

2005 -- Jack Skille. NHL regular for Florida. Traded to Florida for Michael Frolik and Alexander Salak.

2004 -- Cam Barker. Depth for Vancouer. Was traded in 2010 for Nick Leddy and Kim Johnsson.

2003 -- Brent Seabrook. Balls.

2002 -- Anton Babchuk. 7 year NHLer. Depth for Calgary.

2001 -- Tuomu Ruuttu. 10 year NHL career. Traded for Andrew Ladd.

So it's basically a 3-5 year development period for first rounders? Thanks for the post. Most helpful.

Also weighted by losing 3 times.

Sure. Although for guys like Toews and Kane, the development curve is much quicker.

Or Brandon Saad. But for Crawford it was much slower. It depends a lot on position and what the big team needs.

League and PA have new realignment plan. Hawks "conference" would be:

@FriedgeHNIC: III: CHI/COL/DAL/MIN/NASH/STL/WIN

Detroit and Columbus to east. Would suck to lose that rivalry with the Wings.

Leaves room for expansion in west with 14 there and 16 in east. Which is odd because Phoenix may yet move and Seattle is in the mix for a team but so is Quebec.

Move Phoenix to Seattle. Give the expansion franchises to Quebec and Toronto. Put Detroit and the new Toronto team in the west, Quebec in the East. That makes 16 in each. I know they want Detroit in the East but there really aren't any better alternatives. If I can stay up for 10 pm starts for HAwks games then so can the Wings fans when they go out West.

I'd love getting out of the West. Hate all those late games.

Clowe suspended immediately and indefinitely. Will have a meeting with NHL player safety dept. Could get as much as 10 games for coming off the bench Fri night.

If we ever have a dream of getting out if the west, better root for Seattle and KC to get teams, perhaps from Florida. And even then probably wouldn't happen.

the west is where its at. start times will never be perfect, but it's pretty bad for detroit, in the eastern time zone, to be playing teams in the pacific time zone. perhaps special scheduling consideration should be given to ensure the original six play each other more, but outside of that, i think separating the hawks and the wings isn't all that big of a deal at this point. it just makes sense.

The proposed conferences in that realignment would put Chicago in more of a Central though.

exactly. in the new proposal there will not be an Eastern and Western conference. What we kind of think of as divisions are actually conferences. For scheduling there will be no difference in the amount of games The Blackhawks will play against the Sharks as the Wings. So there is not going to be any less late starts if the Hawks were to move to a more Eastern conference.

Well, there should be some less late starts though, as the schedule is West-heavy currently. Under the proposal, it should no longer be West-heavy.

Yeah that's a good point. I just want a more balanced schedule. Play every team every year.

Meh. I hate them quite a bit still. There's too much history there. I would hate anything that would damage the rivalry. Although it seems like Detroit doesn't care all that much since they are desperate to move to the east.

I have always thought the Hawks/Wings rivalry was more of a Hawks thing. Though as I contemplated the move, I will miss the Wings playing the Hawks, Blues, Sharks, Avs, Stars and Canucks on a regular/semi-regular basis. And there is really not a team that I am emotionally attached to beating in our new proposed conference...yet
