should be almost interesting to see where carbomb lines up

He has to be on the fourth line. I'd be shocked if Bickell sits.

Yeah, it's all in here:

He'll skate with Kruger and Frolik. That's an amazing fourth line.

And it says Crow is back and will be the backup tonight, and even Montador is getting closer.

Hawks came out flat tonight.

Side note how does the NHL draft work compared to the Other sports? Is it similar to MLB on terms of development?

It's similar but first-rounders are more likely to start right away in the league.

So looking at the Hawks first rounders over the years, have they been unlucky or what?

Only the very top picks are likely to make an immediate impact, and most picks take some seasoning -- particularly defensemen. Of late, the Hawks have drafted very well. Home grown players include:

Duncan Keith (2nd -- 2002)

Brent Seabrook (1st -- 2003)

Corey Crawford (2nd -- 2003)

Brian Bickell (2nd -- 2004)

Dave Bolland (2nd -- 2004)

Niklas Hjalmarsson (4th --2005)

Jonathan Toews (1st -- 2006)

Patrick Kane (1st -- 2007)

Marcus Kruger (5th -- 2009)

Brandon Bollig (signed to an amateur try-out -- 2010)

Andrew Shaw (5th -- 2011)

Brandon Saad (2nd -- 2011)

12 of 24 players were drafted/signed by the Hawks. 4 were acquired via trade (Frolik, Stalberg, Leddy, Oduya). 8 were signed as free agents (Carcillo, Hossa, Mayers, Brookbank, Montador, Rozsival, Emery).

#1 Picks

2012 -- Teuvo Teravainen. Widely regarded as a steal for the Hawks, he's currently playing center at Jokerit in Finland. Did well in the Worlds, and has a high ceiling.

2011 -- Mark McNeill. Playing at Prince Albert in the WHL, where he is the #1 center. Regarded as a potential #2 center/power forward. He played in Rockford last year after his junior season. He'll go back to Rockford and could be rewarded with a Black Ace role in the playoffs.

2011 -- Phillip Danault. Another center, Danault is in his final year of juniors, where he is Victoriaville's Captain and a leading scorer. Could crack the roster next year, but likely Rockford -- and he'll go there after his junior season ends, as well.

2010 -- Kevin Hayes. A junior at BC, it remains to be seen whether he can use his size to advantage and if his skating improves enough to translate.

2009 -- Dylan Olsen. Cracked the roster last year when injuries were a problem; played tolerably well 3rd pairing minutes. He could be on several NHL rosters today, and is part of the great depth on D for this season.

2008 -- Kyle Beach. Likely a bust. A headcase who's been in Rockford for some time and has been passed on the depth chart by players like Brandon Saad and probably Jeremy Morin. I think he's gone after this year.

2007 -- Patrick Kane. Umm...

2006 -- Jonathan Toews. Yeah...

2005 -- Jack Skille. NHL regular for Florida. Traded to Florida for Michael Frolik and Alexander Salak.

2004 -- Cam Barker. Depth for Vancouer. Was traded in 2010 for Nick Leddy and Kim Johnsson.

2003 -- Brent Seabrook. Balls.

2002 -- Anton Babchuk. 7 year NHLer. Depth for Calgary.

2001 -- Tuomu Ruuttu. 10 year NHL career. Traded for Andrew Ladd.

Unsung hero nominee: Marcus Kruger. 26.9% of his zone starts in the defensive zone, finishing with 53.2% in the offensive zone.

It was a fun game that the Hawks dominated from the second period on. I don't remember ever seeing a team with the extra attacker failed to even gain the offensive zone.

Some thoughts:

Carcillo may say he's fine but he looked really slow out there- like Andrew Brunette slow.

I was wondering when we'd see more of Saad on the PK. Last night showed why.

Speaking of Saad, I'd like to see him replace Stals on the PP in the same role. He has better hands. I guess there's no hurry there.

Stals had a great game and I'd say that even if he hadn't scored that goal.

As to the farm system, the folks who rank such things put the Hawks around 8th this year. Saw some of Teravainen's WJC play and he looked really good.

Wish there was a bona fide goaltending prospect in the pipeline. I still think the Hawks should call on Ottawa at some point about Lehner or even Bishop. Not complaining about what our current guys are doing, of course. But Emery isn't going to be around forever and these days you need two solid keepers.

Small breakdown of the best start in NHL history:

Home: 7 (6-0-1)

Road: 10 (8-0-2)

VS. 2012 playoff teams: 11-0-1

VS. 2013 proj. playoff teams: 8-0-3

By team (last year's playoff seed):

1. VAN 1-0-1

2. STL 1-0-0

3. PHX 2-0-0

4. NAS 1-0-0

5. DET 1-0-0

7. SJ 3-0-0

8. LA 2-0-0

CAL 1-0-0

DAL 1-0-0

COL 0-0-0

MIN 0-0-1

ANA 0-0-1

EDM 1-0-0

CLS 1-0-0

Also, as I mentioned before, the 8th place team last year (LA) had 95 points in 82 games (1.14 PPG). Using that benchmark, the 8th place team this year would have 56 points in 48 games. The Hawks have 31 points in 17 games. To hit 56 points, they'd have to take 25 points in their remaining 31 games, or 25 of the remaining 62 points available to them, 0.82 PPG. To play at a 0.82 PPG pace over a full year would give a team 66 points over a full 82 game season. 66 points last season would be 1 point better than Columbus for worst record in the NHL.

So basically if we play like Columbus the rest of the year we will still make the playoffs.
