We re-signed Jonathan Scott. Personally, I like it. Decent swing tackle, gives us 3 options at RT. If we do somehow land Cooper or Warmack, I think the line is top half in the league anyway.

Potentially yeah but it's hard to say top half OL when they would not have anyone who was even close to the top half at their position last year for a full pro season.

Not sure how Jon Scott elicited the thoughts of top half. He's not really an option at tackle, he should be nothing more than a last resort backup if somebody else is hurt during a game. I think they've stabilized the line. But the best thing they've done is allow themselves flexibility to not be forced into drafting an offensive lineman in the first. They still probably should draft one there anyway.

Wasn't Scott that made me say that, it's the thought of getting Warmack or Cooper.

Well, it could happen, but you're still talking rookie guards. How much impact will they have in year 1? The tackle position may be stabilized but it's not exactly all that good.

My point exactly. Getting one of those OGs, will definitely stabilize the OL. Assuming Carimi is officially moved to the other OG spot, the Bears would go into the season with known starters at every position. Know what to expect from LT and RT for the most part. Know what to expect from Garza. Would expect one of the top 2 OGs in the draft to make the transition to be an above average OG. The only question would be Carimi and there is actual game footage of him playing his new position. Long way to go though to say that OL would be better than 1/2 the league's though.

Got to think about it long term, too. Not drafting young OL talent got us into this mess. We should keep bringing in solid picks regularly.

Can Louis play center? Seems like a good in-house option to try, if he re-signs, and provided they draft OG in the 1st or 2nd round. I think Carimi and one of the 1st round OG prospects could make the Bears above average at both G positions.

He's a little heavy for center, isn't he?

Haha I forgot I was in the Bears thread. I thought this was the Hawks thread and started to wonder wtf they were doing.

That John Scott would be a better offensive guard than any kind of hockey player.

Absolutely. Angelo solidified things with free agents in the mid-2000s, but that does not last. Emery already went through one draft ignoring the line, if he does it again this year then next season we'll be right back into the "pretty much forced to take a lineman in the first two rounds situation and then wind up overdrafting somebody" situation that Angelo found himself.

Emery has understandably had to patch with free agency on the OL this season, but yeah...they need an OL in the first 2 rounds.

After the two LB signings, I'm now guessing they go OL-WR-DL-OL-CB. I also suspect that Hester will traded for a 5 or 6 in 2014.

I could see the first two being switched if Austin is there in the first, and then go with Barrett Jones in the 2nd.

After asking about Jones, I saw a couple days ago he's going to start the season on the PUP list. Really don't see him as a 2nd rounder now. He could very well be there in the 4th.

I certainly wouldn't mind if they come up with another stud WR in this draft, but I'd hesitate to focus on that position early in the draft. Marshall is only just now 29. He's signed for 2 more years and he's not exactly leveraged for a huge contract next time. They utilized 2 3s on him and a 2 on Jeffery already. I think they can afford to wait on WR more so than just about any position, save QB and RB.

I just think that Trestman is going to want to focus on offense with that first rounder. If they can get a speedy guy like Austin, they can get rid of Hester, and let Austin take that WR spot, along with KR/PR duties.

I'm fine with focusing on offense, but it should be an offensive lineman. You need 5 of them just to play a game and 6-7 to last a season. WR is a 2-3 man group on the field at most times. They've already devoted a ton of cash to receiving threat at TE and have a great receiving RB. A weak link on an offensive line can negatively affect the rest of the line. A weak link at receiver can just play special teams all day.

Austin is electric but you could always get a really nice speed WR in round 2 or later like Markus Wheaton or Stedman Bailey.

Ryan Swope would be a nice WR addition in the 2nd or possibly 3rd round. He can fly and will make the tough catch across the middle too. Kid is tough as nails.

I agree with Walter Football that Austin doesn't make it past 16. But the 1st 3 rounds are loaded with WR's that fit the Bears' need. With Emery's drafting history, I have little doubt a WR isn't selected in that range, like Wheaton or Bailey.

Kelvin Hayden expected to re_sign with Bears, according to source. Nothing official just yet.

He better send Captain Munnerlyn a fruit basket.
