Urlacher's ability to stir emotions aside, I think I'd be 100% in favor of trading for Albert if reports that KC wants a 2nd rounder are true.

I know they have limited picks and already signed a LT. But Bushrod is not very good and I'm a big believer in making parts of your team dominant, preferably on the offense, to allow lesser parts to benefit from the trickle down of that dominance. A dominant line can make almost any receiver group productive. A dominant line can make any RB a star. If the Bears had the league's best receivers they could get away with a second rate line because defenses would have to focus so hard on covering them.

As things stand they already need to spend a draft pick on an offensive lineman, if you can get a stud for a 2nd rounder then why the hell not do it? I'd love to see them trade down from their first pick to get more quantity through round 3, and then spin a 2nd to KC if that is really the cost.

More like Roach's successor. DJ Williams plays OLB.

Nice signing though, good value and he should be more productive than Urlacher.

Pompei seems to imply that he has played both...

Williams, who has played outside linebacker as well, was scheduled to make $6 million from the Broncos. That explains why he was released.

His acquisition gives the Bears flexibility in the draft. They no longer need to draft a middle linebacker with the 20th pick, though the linebacker position remains a priority.

Urlacher is acting this way because he obviously is hurt by the willingness to let him walk. To me, its easy to see both sides. But I'm glad Emery made a tough decision. As for DJ Williams? Very nice move. Love our offseason so far honestly.

Interesting. I seem to remember him only playing on the outside.

Either way, guys like Brown or Ogletree could play inside or out.

ETA: Checked with a friend who is a big Broncos fan and he said DJ played both positions and would often switch between MLB and WLB from one season to the next. Nice flexibility.

Williams missed nine games while serving a pair of NFL-mandated suspensions last season and was deemed expendable after Wesley Woodyard had a breakout season at weakside linebacker in Jack Del Rio's defense.

The contract Williams signed gives the Bears protection should Williams not stay on track. His base salary is $900,000, and none of his contract is guaranteed. He can earn a maximum of $1.75 million if he hits a workout bonus and a series of roster bonuses spread out over time.

Can't complain there.

Its the kind of deal that Williams will play hard with and we gain a pretty explosive player with talent for just a little bit of money.

Great deal.

Now draft a high upside LB and we'll be looking good.

2007-08

Following the injury-related release of Al Wilson, Williams was moved to his third position, middle linebacker.[6] He finished the 2007 season 2nd in the NFL[8] with 141 tackles (106 solo) along with one sack and one interception.[4]

[edit]2009-10

2009 brought change to the Broncos defense when former Patriots offensive coordinator, Josh McDaniels was hired as head coach. McDaniels hired former 49ers head coach and defensive guru Mike Nolan as defensive coordinator. Nolan installed the 3-4 defense, in which he moved D.J. Williams to inside linebacker (ILB). Playing the "Jack" ILB position (same as Patrick Willis - 49ers), Williams finished the season with 122 tackles, 3.5 sacks and 3 forced fumbles.[4]

The Denver Broncos will be without linebacker D.J. Williams until mid-November after the NFL added three games to his suspension Friday.

Williams was punished for violating the NFL's substance-abuse policy following his August conviction of driving while ability impaired.

Breer: The men behind the rivalry

Williams already was serving a six-game suspension to start the season for violating the league's banned-substances policy -- such as performance enhancing drugs -- after the NFL said he supplied a "non-human" urine sample during a drug test.

The offer consisted of a $500,000 signing bonus, a $500,000 workout bonus and a base salary of $1 million.

Asked if the offer was fair, four NFL general managers and eight other personnel executives, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said it was. One NFC executive said Urlacher deserved more — perhaps up to $3 million because a team generally pays a premium to keep a beloved, homegrown player happy.

‘‘The club could have offered nothing,’’ one general manager said.

Added an NFC personnel executive, ‘‘He’s an aging guy who can’t run. Bold move — and the right move — by [bears GM Phil] Emery. Better to get rid of a player a year too early than a year too late.’’

Jensen says we're likely to sign another veteran LB and mentioned Nick Burnett as a possibility. If true, it gives us that much more flexibility during the draft.

That'd be good, although it'd still be nice to draft a LB as long term its a definite weak point.

I'd love to see a few prospects to help at the LB and CB positions which I'm sure we'll be addressing in the draft.

We're going to need to make CB a priority at some point being that these days you need 3 solid corners.

With an offensive minded coach now(finally as far as I'm concerned) I think we're going to see a shift, maybe substantially, to where more of our cap will be distributed to the offense. If we add another LB thru FA, I can see OG and WR being our top 2 draft choices. That said, I'd love a trade down emerge that gets us an extra pick inside the top 3 rounds.

The last regime had so much tied into the LB position that it negatively affected their ability to address other needs. I like filling LB with lower cost players. Look at what the Giants did in their Super Bowl year, they were running out street free agents that postseason. Their cap space went to pass rushers, DBs and the QB. Linebackers just don't impact the game enough to account for so much cap space.
