Everyone realizes that Lovie Smith probably won't get fired, right?

They'll fire Tice, promote Bates, and rinse/repeat.

It depends whether Emery is willing to let Smith coach in his contract year, which I wouldn't be thrilled with, but it is better than the complete slap in the face that an extension would be.

The logic will be:

-The defense was dominant

-The offense was inept

-Lovie is a great defensive coach

-Tice was the coordinator of the inept offense

And the streak continues! Another year without a road playoff game and an appearance in Wild Card weekend. Have no idea how we've managed to go 18 years and counting without either.

we were 10-6, we did all that was humanly possible, but something cosmic is going on.

yeah Lovie is gonna get fired though

stop doom and glooming and stop worrying about the McCaskeys.

What indication do we have that Emery has that kind of power

Because he is the general manager of the football team and that power comes with the position

Oh and next week I hope Minny kicks Green Bay's ass.

I wish. They're getting blown out next weekend.

I hate the Vikings (a lot) far more than I hate the Packers (which isn't much at all). I will enjoy that thoroughly.

[expletive] the Vikings.

I'd say the onus is on you to show that the general manager of the team doesn't.

Sucks right now, but probably better than being humiliated at SF. No way in hell this offense scores on them.

Plus there's a better chance Lovie gets canned now.

Draft OL and LB please.

i tend to think he does have that power.

this is exactly what i think

It will tell who really is making the call. If Emery really has the authority to make the call, Lovie will be gone.

He wasn't able to hire his own head coach to begin with. We have an ultra conservative ownership group and just missed the playoffs by the narrowest of margins. It's no slam dunk but I bet Lovie is back.

I'm pretty confident Lovie will be back. Emery has the power, but he didn't get the job to come and clean house. He doesn't have the background to show he's capable of doing that. He's a talent evaluator. I feel the purpose of his hire was to have ultimate say so on bringing in talent and let everyone else "do their thing", Lovie included.

Bears and Vikings win was the worst-case scenario today.

Why would you say that? I think Emery is inclined to keep Lovie around if he can. I think he genuinely respects the job he has done and thinks he can continue working with him.

I am going to assume Lovie stays with some turnover at the OC job, again. Maybe if they actually put some effort into finding a suitable offensive line it will work.

I think any GM would want their own guy in there. The Bears have missed the playoffs 5 out of 6 years, and collapsed in two straight, for whatever reason. If Lovie stays, he surely will get another new OC, and I think if that happens, it says that they're keeping Lovie because ownership doesn't want to eat that last year of his contract, and pay two HC's for 2013.

If it makes anyone feel better, the 2 teams that failed to help the Bears out the last 2 weeks (Houston and Green Bay) both blew their bye weeks because of it.

I think the "doesn't want to pay 2 coaches" line doesn't hold up. The Bears spend, and in the NFL teams pay out contracts to fired employees all the time.

Also, most GMs want their own guy in there. But Emery isn't like a lot of GMs. He's not some young up and comer. He's a boy scout. He's not some super aggressive megalomaniac. I don't think he's trying to reinvent the wheel or even leave a huge impression on the game. He just wants to find good football players to put on the team and let the coach coach them. Frankly I'm not even sure he's plugged into the league enough to know who should be the next coach anyways. He was a strength coach at also rans schools for most of his football career and has only been a scout in three organizations for little over a decade. I'm not even sure I want this guy hiring a new coach.

Plus its just one season, its not like you are firing him with 3 years left on a big deal or something. How many times have you seen an NFL coaches contract simply run out and then not be brought back? I think it was Hub or someone who was talking about that several weeks ago...it almost never happens. They always get canned with years left on the deal.
