Is Domonic Brown actually good defensively despite UZR hating his guts?

Because I can't figure out what I'm supposed to like about him other than he teed off on AA in 2010 and is maybe healthy after a bunch of injuries.

UZR also has less than 100 games to judge him with, half of those while he was battling leg injuries. From some searching, the consensus seems to be "mediocre range, good to very good arm" as a RF.

That's all true, but I'm a tiny bit skeptical because that consensus comes from people talking about him as a prospect, and prospect defense is almost always overrated.

It seems like the best case is a mediocre defensive guy with a mediocre bat and mediocre power taking up a corner outfield spot on the cheap for a couple of years, assuming he can stay healthy after a bunch of injuries. I'm not even sure I want that, let alone giving up cheap Soriano for him.

am i missing something? what in god's name are the dbacks doing?

They're trading Bauer for Gregorius, Tony [expletive] Sipp and Lars Anderson. Congrats, Dayton Moore isn't even moron of the week!

The D'backs certainly had to value at least one of Barney, Laker, Alcantara more than this [expletive] Didi clown.

I am so confused. Whether Towers liked him or not, Bauer was a legitimate trade piece, and this is what he gets?

The last few days kind of make it feel like baseball GMs have an insulated little world that has a completely different set of prospect rankings than the rest of us.

Thats true, I doubt they look at BA and stop there. But still.......This is a pitiful return on a guy quite a few still look at as a guy with ace potential. Bauer must have gotten Towers wife pregnant.

Unbelievable. The Cubs really need to get in on a trade with these idiot GMs.

Prediction, by tomorrow Bauer will be called an overhyped nothing special arm and a terrible human being while Didi is a diamond in the rough with lots of untapped upside.

Jon Heyman ‏@JonHeymanCBS

#dbacks like didi gregorius, who'd be under their control for 6 yrs (as opposed to 2 for asdrubal). #3way

what a clown, this Heyman guy! we know from jersey's emphatic declarations that organizations don't really value team control

As far as 2B goes, contenders(or those that at least appear to think they are) KC and Baltimore are in need. Kelly Johnson, Ryan Theriot, and Ronny Cedeno are FA. For SS, Detroit, Oakland, Seattle, Pittsburgh, and San Diego have needs. Theriot, Cedeno, and Drew are available in FA, with Hardy, Peralta, and Dee Gordon being involved in trade rumors on some level. Got to think Darwin Barney is fairly sought after with this being the landscape.

Relative to the Diamondbacks needs (a good defensive minded shortstop that was close to ready), Gregorius makes a lot more sense for them than Lake or Alcantara. Whether or not they bought Barney as a shortstop, I don't know. Gregorius has a bit more offensive upside/ceiling than what Barney has shown.

All that said, I'm baffled at the trade, and yet, sort of not. I'm not because the rumors had suggested for awhile that there were issues between Bauer and the Arizona FO, and that the FO might not view Bauer as highly. To me, that's a fault of their scouting department in that, it was well known that Bauer preferred to do things certain ways.

That said, this is still fairly baffling in that, one would think that Bauer had enough value to net a higher ceiling talent than Gregorius. Maybe I'm selling Gregorius short, but as good as he is defensively, his offensive ceiling doesn't look that much better than Darwin Barney's.

Exactly, toonster. A lot of fault goes to the Diamondbacks for souring on Bauer; they knew who they wer drafting and Bauer made no bones about it.

Of course the Orioles are well on their way to screwing up Bundy too. Teams don't know what to do with these pitchers who have their own plans and ideas on their body and pitching regimen.

Wait ... how are the Orioles screwing up Bundy? I've been a touch busy, but I haven't noticed anything to get concerned about, since I'm somewhat partial to my local teams. Did I miss something?
