Wittenmeyer was on with Mully and Hanley and suggested that the medical reports on Haren did not check out good and that is the reason why the Cubs walked away. Said he "couldn't confirm it", but that's what he heard.

Well, this is the perfect pickup for what we are doing so long as it doesn't cost any real prospects.

He is on a one-year contract. We need starting pitchers. If he does well, he is traded at the deadline. If he doesn't, he's gone after the season. We also don't have to convince him to only sign a one-year contract like we would some free agent pitcher.

I'd almost be surprised if this didn't happen, unless multiple teams have strong interest and start to actually offer up some sort of package.

Its the perfect pickup even if it does cost a decent prospect (someone in the Vitters/Watkins/McNutt vein?).

Worst case (assuming his back is OK and his performance after his return indicates that) is he doesn't bounce back and you make in a QO next year and get him back on another pillow contract/get draft pick compensation if he signs elsewhere. Best case is he is the top targeted SP at the trade deadline.

Trading for Haren is basically going to guarantee that at the very least, you get to add at least a first round-ish prospect down the line. Don't really think of what Haren will do for the Cubs on the field next year (because we aren't going to contend), think about what Haren will net the Cubs when he leaves. And that will be more than just a decent prospect.

I THOUGHT YOU WERE DEAD

I'M ALIVE

Hasn't been much to talk about cub-wise in a while and with the lockout I need to get my fix somewhere.

Excellent move for Haren. His only statistical flaw last year was an above average HR rate. Moving to Petco will certainly help him reestablish value on the market.

They're moving the fences in.

He should go to Seattle, then!

HAHA... Pretty sure Seattle is moving their fences in as well.

According to Buster Olney of ESPN.com, the physical concern teams have with Dan Haren is not a bad back, but rather a bad hip.

Haren missed three weeks of action this season with what the Angels called a back injury, so that's naturally what most assumed might turn potentially interested suitors off. But, it's apparently his hip that's the issue and perhaps the reason why a trade from the Angels to the Cubs earlier this month fell through. As Olney notes, Haren is "very respected" and "will get a chance" from someone, but he'll probably have to settle for a one- or two-year deal.

Yeah, I still kinda want Haren, assuming he projects to get on the mound at all this season. If he's able to pitch, he's going to pitch well. And I think it gives the Cubs so many options. Of course, the trade option, but he could also be a semi-longterm guy (2-4 years) for the top 1/2 of the rotation. He would also give the Cubs a lot of flexibility to do whatever benefits the team most with him, Garza, and Samardzija.
