why on earth would anyone watch the dodgers? is there really 8 billion dollars worth of dodger fans? what is the impetus for spending this money?

It's more like a couple hundred million per year, and yes, I'd have to assume there is. Live sports broadcasting is about the last cash cow television programming out there.

I'm guessing it's mainly because sports are the main thing left where people actually watch commercials because they watch it live.

plus it's something people actually are willing to pay for on their bill, and/or freak out about if the channel is unavailable. They don't call 'em fanatics for nothing.

When are the cubs broadcasting deals up, again?

WGN is up after the 2014 season, I believe, and the CSN one is much further away than that...like 2019 or something.

Way, way, way too late. It's really annoying to see teams able to capitalize on this now.

The Dodgers just dealt Harand and 4.2 mill to the Rockies for Ramon Hernandez, who was DFA'd a few days ago. Harang isn't a stud, but he's a fairly solid SP. Sending him alone for Hernandez is awful. Adding cash on top of it though?

Dusty killed Harang's arm the same as he killed many others. Someone should [expletive] in his dugout.

Zack Greinke was diagnosed with a fractured left collarbone.

Awful news for the Dodgers and fantasy owners. Greinke sustained the injury Thursday night when Padres' outfielder Carlos Quentin charged the mound following a hit-by-pitch.

Assembling a mercenary team angers the baseball gods.

Carlos Quientin should probably try to avoid Dodger parking lots.

Ted Lilly remains on Dodgers DL despite the fact he's healthy; LA must decide to reinstate, trade or release him or a grievance will follow

It's not like they could use SP with Greinke hurt. How odd.

So, with all the talk about Miami's inability to score runs, there hasn't been much discussion about the Dodgers. Even with Gonzalez + Crawford having an OPS of .962 or better, they've still only scored 41 runs this season. That's only six more than Miami.

$200M just doesn't buy what it used to.

Kemp's been beyond awful. Hanley's out. I think things are looking pretty good for them, all things considered.

well if you want to say kemp will return to form then you have to point out crawford's 1.000 ops or whatever it is now.

i wouldn't say thing are looking good for them, considering the context. if you're going to spend an unprecedented amount of money like they did, i would have hoped for better stars than the ones they got.

I actually think Crawford will be very good for them. That said, they're definitely snakebit. Billingsley has elbow issues now. Starting a season with 8 legit major league SP and inside the first 3 weeks, you're starting Stephen Fife. They're going to regret trading Harang.

He's at .922; obviously that's not going to stick around, but hey, maybe he goes back to "just" being really good Carl Crawford again. It's not like it's a crazy LaHair situation.

And regret trading Webster and de la Rosa in a trade where they picked up millions in salary for Boston castoffs.

It'll be fun seeing Webster make his big league debut today.

I still look at that trade as a win-win. But I have doubts Gonzalez lives up to his contract. I'm very interested to see Webster today. He's really getting talked up bigtime, guess we'll see if its just typical Boston/New York overhype or not.

He's a solid 2/3 type pitching prospect. If he's getting more hype than that, that's silly. But he's definitely a very good prospect and the Dodgers definitely overpaid when you consider they picked up the tab on mediocre players like Beckett and Crawford AND gave up solid young pitching talent like de la Rosa and Webster.

Here's Rany Jazayerli basically saying the same thing you did.
