So, Eagles just bad, or Lions starting to turn the corner?

Eagles are bad. Lions are still bad until they string some wins together.

The Lions would be 4-1 if it weren't for a couple of special teams plays.

The Lions have been mediocre. Not bad.

I guess it depends on your perspective. Last in the division (standings and DVOA) is bad.

Last in a good division doesn't equal bad. Philly is quite mediocre, much like Detroit.

The Lions and Packers are much better than their combined 5-6 records. The Bears have gotten a lot of breaks with those two starting poorly this year. I think they'll all be in it at the end and the last few weeks with all the division games is going to be intense. The Lions/Packers missteps have given us the luxury of having a couple too.

Why is that? Why can the Bears take a basic scheme — one that shows up in high school ball on Friday nights — and beat up the NFL with it through five weeks of the season?

Coaching. That's why.

Go ahead; draw up Cover-2 on the chalkboard.

Two deep safeties aligned 15 yards off the ball with underneath zone defenders and a four-man rush. It doesn't even look cool compared to some of the exotic pressure schemes the 49ers, Steelers, Ravens, Packers and so on run.

However, this goes much deeper than X's and O's or game plans. Smith has created a style, a culture that players buy into.

This starts in the offseason. The drill work is based on getting to a landmark, reading the quarterback and breaking on the ball. And repetition is king. They do the same drills over and over so they can make plays in this defense.

The idea is to stay square, trust your eyes and explode out of your break with speed. Execute that and scoring on defense, well, is expected.

A ball on the ground? You scoop it up and take it all the way to the end zone. It doesn't matter if a ball falls off the back of an equipment truck in Bourbonnais during training camp. If it's on the ground, someone in a Bears uniform will go get it.

Interceptions, fumble recoveries, you name it, the Bears practice taking the ball away every day. It doesn't matter if it's a 7-on-7 session during minicamp. If the opportunity is there to make the play, they get to the numbers and put the ball in the end zone.

I got a taste of it myself when the Rams hired Smith after my rookie season in 2000 to fix our defense. We thought we played fast and we talked about creating turnovers the previous season.

But we had no idea how slow we really were playing until Smith showed up.

I barely made it through the first mini-camp practice, and I wasn't alone. Guys were bent over, tired, gassed, ready to vomit. We started the day with full-speed pursuit drills and ended every play with 11 helmets around the ball.

We ran all afternoon and also learned that talk is cheap when it comes to forcing turnovers.

Instead of going through half-speed post practice drills where we would "punch" the ball out amid laughter and jokes, every play in practice became an opportunity. It didn't matter if we were in shorts and helmets. When the offense had the ball, it was our job to rip it out.

That's contagious. It really is.

So apparently the Bears aren't promoting from the practice squad. Unknown what move will accompany the Bell release.

LM: #Bears sign TE Brody Eldridge and waive RB Kahlil Bell.

Huh, so 4 TE's wasn't enough eh? (I know...techinically Rodriguez is a FB)

Grantland tries to sort out the top 8 teams in the NFL after a messed up week 6 (spoiler: Denver and San Diego aren't among them, so the game tonight doesn't matter for it): http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/8506988/the-top-teams-game-rest-week-6-news

Hah, I was going through that list looking at 6...5...4...3 and thinking "wait wtf don't tell me they don't have the Bears in the top 8, this is so ann- oh there they are"

Apparently Eldridge is more of FBish TE. So I guess Rodriguez isn't ready to come back yet.

I still don't see how Miami is "just outside the top 8" or how Indy is average. Miami is just another joke in the new joke of a division. And if not for a miraculous win one for the gipper victory last week Indy would be 1-5 with 3 blowout losses.

There's a pretty steep dropoff in quality after the top 8. Minnesota/San Diego/Arizona/Seattle is #9 at this point. Miami could be the fourth best team in the AFC.

Indy is average perhaps within the AFC, but bottom third overall. I'd put Indy above KC, Oakland, Jacksonville, Tennessee and Cleveland easy, and I'm not exactly sold on Buffalo, Pittsburgh or Cincy being better than them either.

I guess basically what I'm saying is there are three decent teams in the AFC and maybe Denver is OK too.

Meh, one makes opinion. I think the Giants are one of the best 2-3 teams in football and will be there at the end. In my mind, the Bears could be anywhere among the #3-6 teams. I will say, I forgot to account for the bad injuries the Ravens received yesterday. I should have them a bit lower.

Philly is interesting because they look like crap a lot of the time, but they've also played a really tough schedule so far and are still 3-3. OK barely winning in Cleveland looked bad, but then they beat Baltimore, lost to an Arizona team that was playing really well at the beginning of the year, beat the Giants who as you know I think highly of, and then lost 2 very close games in Pittsburgh and against Detroit. They probably should be 4-2 instead of 3-3, but I think they are within the top 10 teams in football and will prove it over the course of the season.

Yeah, those are some of the worst power rankings ever. The worst part is that you will never get the 30 minutes of your life back that you spent making them, and I won't get the 30 seconds back that I spend reading it.
