Any interesting WR names out there?

I wonder if Emery would roll the dice on a TO or Chad Johnson.

Gotta be better options out there than digging up those corpses.

I don't see the need to pick up a high level WR unless Bennetts injury is worse than we know about. Otherwise, you just move everyone up one spot and pick up a guy to be the 5th or 6th WR. Didn't we like one of the WRs in the preseason that didn't make the cut? I cant remember.

Anyways...

Marshall - Bennett - Hester - Sanzenbacher - Weems - Scrub pickup

I'd like to see them go for a proven veteran in the #2 WR position. I dont trust Bennett or Hester to fill that void and take those snaps.

How about Plaxico Burress?

There's really not much out there in WRs. According to this site, Patrick Crayton, Lee Evans (isn't he somewhere though?), Jabar Gaffney, Anthony Gonzalez, T.J. Houshmandzadeh, and Mike Williams from Seattle are all available.

I don't trust any "proven veteran" WR who is currently on the street without a team and available to sign.

Exactly. And its not like Jeffery is going to miss the season. There is absolutely nothing wrong with Bennett as the number 2 receiver against the Lions, Panthers and Titans. And that's if Jeffery misses an entire month. Bennett has the ability to be a decent #2 receiver and was paid like one by the Bears just last year. If you are counting the RBs, the #2 receiver is maybe the 4th most important target for Cutler (behind Marshall, Forte and Bush).

Rotoworld now says 4-6 weeks.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported on Monday Night Countdown that Alshon Jeffery's fractured right hand is expected to cost him 4-6 weeks.

An earlier report from ESPN Chicago was more optimistic, suggesting Jeffery might only miss "a few weeks." But it sounds like Jeffery will be out longer than the Bears' Week 6 bye, and probably much longer. In the Bears' first five games, Jeffery showed promise playing opposite Brandon Marshall, securing 14 passes for 184 yards and two touchdowns. Aside from perhaps Kendall Wright down in Tennessee, Jeffery was the best early-season rookie wide receiver in the league over the first month-plus. Now, he'd return in Week 9 in an absolute best-case scenario.

I still don't know exactly when he hurt his hand. He was wincing when the ball made contact with his hands. Did Cutler break Alshon's hand with the throw?

It wasn't on that play. He didn't really use his right hand to do much with that pass. He had to hurt it earlier in that drive I'm assuming, or else he wouldn't have been on the field for the TD in the first place.

Well, if he's going to miss 3 weeks, these next 3 would be the ones to miss. If he's going to miss 4 weeks (3 games), that would still put him back for Houston and SF. It's a pretty big loss obviously, because now teams can focus that much more on Marshall. I don't really see the point in going out and signing someone. First off, the signee isn't going to be very good, as there aren't a lot of good players hanging out waiting for their phone to ring. Secondly, even 6 weeks is a short-term injury in the grand scheme of things.

I agree completely. Plus I think there's a chance Bennet could be halfway decent while playing across from Marshall.

Why can't Bennett play 2nd fiddle to Marshall? He's shown some decent ability, provided he's healthy. I'd say he's got qualities that Jeffrey doesn't have, at this point in their careers. He's fine, no?

From what I've seen, Jeffrey hasn't really acheived separation. To me he's a developing prospect with nice potential, but he's a rookie and is unrefined at this point.

Bennett has some nice experience under his belt and has been a good target for Cutler when healthy. He's more than capable of being a decent counterpart to Marshall. Just my opinion. I don't think we lose much, if anything.

I don't think Bennett has the size or speed to get separation. He's got steady hands and can run a good route. That's about it.

We don't necessarily need that for him to succeed in the #2 role. Marshall gives you both of those. With a lot of the defense's focus on Cutler, someone who can run good routes and catch what is thrown to him can gave Cutler a solid 2nd option. Plus Cutler is still fairly comfortable with Bennett, as they have been the last few seasons.

And college. I'm with Soul on this one. I really don't anticipate that big of a drop off. Definitely not much of a point in going out and signing some retread.

No kidding. They have decent options, and it's not like Alshon was some kind of world-beater.

I know Alshon is still developing but he's still our 2nd receiver. Our 3rd "receiver" in yards is Kellen Davis and then Hester. Before the 2 Hester catches these last two weeks, there was a lot of people on the board repeatedly whining that Hester isn't a real WR, etc. Bennett is a good WR, but can he do the same things Alshon can do? How does not having to cover two big WR's change what opposing defenses are able to do? I'm not saying it's crippling, but there's an impact.

As far as signing a retread, sounds like that's not really gonna happen:

With Jeffery on the mend, the Bears could promote rookie receiver Joe Anderson from the practice squad. Signing a veteran receiver might not benefit the team because Jeffery might be back in the lineup by the time a newcomer learns the offense.

I like how good teams winning in unattractive ways is not a bad list to be on for some teams, but the bears get criticized for being in a game that was too close at halftime. Also, when he gets to the Jags, he refers to them getting mauled... not that they kept it close.
