How has his play been in CF?

UZR has him at -1.7. I think he's been much better, maybe not enough sample size?

He has too small of a sample size probably for any sort of metrics (UZR, dWAR, etc) to be accurate or indictive of what he really is right now.

Kyle's waffling-sense is probably going insane the last few days.

Brett Jackson is a wash-out who can't hit. It'll take a lot to change my mind on that one.

huh, i thought for sure his .263/.440/.684 week would have blown the weather vane of your tenuous opinions in the complete other direction

On the other hand, I'm completely unsurprised that your enthusiasm for peripherals has waned the moment they stopped supporting a player you are excited about who has a borderline acceptable slash line.

like when i pointed out his league-worst contact rate (a few hours ago)

Yeah, all I got out of that post was "He's the worst player in the league at actually hitting baseballs but we can probably work around that."

"probably"?

and small correction, he'd place worst amongst qualifiers...vitters for example actually has a worse contact rate

I am convinced Brett has done something dastardly to Kyle. :D But seriously, his K rate has gone up at every level so of course it's a huge red flag. It's where his makeup has to come in and see if he can improve his swing plane or whatever else it is that's needed in order for him to become a major league starter. Because if not for that, he already is one by every other skill. I've always been a defender of his and I probably will be the last to leave the train, but I do think he's got it in him to become a solid everyday contributor for us. I'm counting on Sveum to work some magic somehow(and yes, I admit that if I were a betting man, I'd stay away from this one, based on Brett's past).

I don't expect him to all of a sudden wind up this season with numbers that allow us to go into next year thinking he's our longterm CF, but I am very hopeful that he ends this season with us thinking it's a very legit possibility. I'll continue to throw some magic beans in hope of it anyway, because as an organization, we do truly need him.

It irks me how much style points credit he gets from stathead fans. It's like if he were a pitcher who a tall, perfect pitcher's frame, plus command, plus movement on his breaking stuff, and everybody wanted to hope that with coaching he could improve his 75-mph, perfectly straight fastball.

He can't hit. All the other stuff is nice, but he can't hit and that's that. I mean, we might as well keep giving him chances for the rest of the year, but I'm perfectly ready to cut bait with him this offseason.

Kyle, give me a sample line you think he'd put up with 600 plate appearances, including HR and SB. K's too, I'm just curious how bad you think he'll be.

600 PAs

240 Ks

60 BB

15 HR

285 BIP

At a .333 BABIP, that comes to something like 203/283/342

OK, so you think he'll K at a rate of 40%, if it dropped to 33%, is that good enough to be a starter for you? I don't see the rest of your numbers being unrealistic at all.

Yes. But if he were capable of K-ing 33% of the time at the MLB level, I doubt he'd have done it 34% of the time in the PCL.

On June 1st, Jackson had a K rate under 30% in well over 400 AAA PA's. So I guess he'd be A-OK if we had just promoted him then?

"K-rate under 30% in AAA" isn't some kind of badge of honor. It was a deeply significant concern at that rate, too.
