Just bought tickets to go see the Chiefs play in South Bend. I'll be at field level just off the right side of the dugout. Never been there before. Looking at a diagram of their stadium, I think they may have their reliever's warm up right there just like Wrigley (I'm assuming most minor league parks do it like that?).

Anyway, hoping to get a good look at Cates and maybe a close up view of some of the relievers while they warm up. Also should get a nice critique of Zapata in RF if he's played there today. I'm crossing my fingers for a big showing from Baez.

Baez strikes again, over the batter's eye to dead center.

Having gone to literally 100 games in SB, I have maybe seen 2 other balls over the batters eye

His status is about to go through the roof. May take til next year, but who knows? I'm starting to think he's got a legit chance to be top 20 at the end of this year. On a different good note, Szczur is 3-3 against Jose Fernandez.

Rough outing by Cates. At least it looked like he didn't give up too many hard hits and he didn't walk anyone.

So, if Baez can stick at shortstop are we looking at his ceiling being the best offensive shortstop in baseball?

Eh, I'd still say Profar has the higher ceiling and probably the better chance to reach it too, because he's already got plate discipline.

And Troy tulowitzki is still alive, I think.

Hell, I wasn't even thinking about guys in the majors. I'm still very hopeful Castro can become a perennial 25-30 home run guy.

that's pretty insane. I'd be happy if he's 15-20.

Really? I think he'll get to 15 this year at 22. I can definitely see that moving upwards the more he fills out.

tennessee beat up on zach lee, tagging him with 7 runs allowed (5 earned), 7 hits and 4 walks in 3.2 innings. maybe the dodgers should trade him.

I'm more out of the loop here but what's the big appeal with Lee? His numbers haven't been that great since being drafted. I'm sure there's more to it.

Electric stuff although some people differ on how good it actually is.

He can get it up to 98, but reports are he's sitting at 89-92.

I went tonight with my family and had to leave after the 5th, so I managed to see Baez homer, single, and triple. Zapata was in left and had a good at bat with an RBI opposite field single. I'll probably go tomorrow and Monday, too. A few notes:

Baez:

First inning, first pitch HR to dead center out of the park. The fence is (guessing) 12' tall and the batters eye is probably 20' tall above the fence. 405' to center field and it cleared it easily.

Second at bat he took a few pitches and eventually went back up the middle for a single. He made a delayed steal of second, the catcher's throw was to the 3rd base side of the bag, but had it been accurate would have made it a close play. The throw went into CF and Baez moved over to 3rd.

Third at bat he went with the pitch and hit the wall on the fly (maybe 5' shy of another homer) in right center. He was looking triple all the way and slid into third head first, though he could have went in standing up. He was eventually stranded at third, but he put continuous pressure on the catcher by starting for home on every ball in the dirt.

I'm not sure if there was a ball hit to him while I was watching, but in the 4th he chased a blooper/pop-up into left center and caught it on the run over his shoulder. Both outfielders were running at him and he never quit running to get to it. Very impressive play.

It was obvious that he was by far the best player on the field tonight. The opposing pitcher was nothing special, throwing 89-90 mostly.

Cates:

He looked to have a very deliberate delivery/motion, even in warmups. That said, he didn't look like he was max-effort guy. The first inning really screwed him with two errors (a throwing error by Darvill at third and a fielding error by DeVoss with the bases loaded). He threw a lot of pitches that inning. He was 90-92 throughout. Also threw a 73 mph curve and I believe a 81 mph change up.

Shafer: 2 K's in his first inning of work. Looked very fluid/loose compared to Cates.

DeVoss and Zapata both showed a good plate approach, taking a lot of pitches and eventually making solid contact.

Darvill hit the hardest non-Baez ball of the night. He continues to intrigue me, but his odds seem slim of getting to MLB level.

If any questions or request for what to look for tomorrow/Monday, let me know.

I guess I could see him in the low 20's, but to approach thirty would take a radical approach change, or a really lucky year.
