Yeah, bird and magic were old and past their prime (Kobe isn't in his prime anymore either), but magic was still pretty good and his backup is John Stockton.

Kobe is an idiot. Kobe is 33 years old. Magic was only 32 (and 10,000 less minutes or so) when he was on the Dream Team. Only Bird was older than Kobe and past their prime. I heard that like Dream Team avg age is like 28 and 2012 is 26, but 2012 team could be "older" if you looks at minutes played by each guy due to guys leaving college early or went to NBA from high school compared to the Dream Team at their point of their career.

But at the same time, we're seeing guys play longer at a higher level now than they did in 1992 for a number of reasons (better training, advances in medicine, etc.)

Yeah, and although Magic was 32, he had been out of the league for a year at that point. But, it is Magic on a team full of legends. He is probably the best passer ever and all he needs to do is pass. Really only Bird was old (or at least played older than his age at that point), and in this game he might not have played much. It was fine that he was on the 92 team because they were going to destroy everyone anyway and he was an all-time legend.

But yeah, that would be fun to watch. However, if they played a series, I don't see how 92 doesn't sweep them. Clearly Lebron is the best player on this years team, and yet the 92 team has perhaps the best perimeter defender in history to guard him in Pippen. It would also be interesting to see how Lebron would handle some viscious trash talking from some of the 92 team.

Of all the sports and time periods that could use a time machine matchup', this sounds like the best idea

Agreed, this matchup and the '85 Bears vs. Everybody else.

I think the 92 Dream Team would probably have most of the fan support too, though that could be nostalgia more than anything.

I dunno... LeBron and Kobe are somewhat villains to anyone not Heat or Lakers fans. Though, I always viewed Ewing as a villain, but that was just because I was a Bulls fan and he played for the Knicks. I'm not sure what fans league-wide thought of Jordan though...

I think overall, the '92 team had a good group of likable players, who were also phenomenal players. What a concept. You don't HAVE to be a douche 24/7 to be good?

Nobody under the age of 30 even really remembers the Dream Team. Under 21 probably doesn't remember any career of any NBA player on that team. I'd figure allegiances would be divided along those lines, mostly.

That's REALLY looking back on the '92 team with rose-colored glasses. Guys like Jordan, Bird, Magic, Ewing and Barkley were all notorious douchebags.

Notorious among their contemporaries, but darlings in the media (ok, not Ewing or Barkley). Today's media focuses much more on the negative personalities of athletes than media 20 years ago

That's more the environment of having a 24-hour news cycle, but back then it's not like these guys were hiding many secrets. Everyone knew they were pricks.

I think if you took a national poll in '92 that said "Is Michael Jordan a prick?", the results would be around 3% Yes, 97% No.

Holy hell, no.

The world was in love with Jordan. '92 was before his "baseball vacation" and before all of the infidelity stuff was made public.

The world was in love with the brand and appreciated the talent; most basketball fans that weren't Bulls fans couldn't stand the guy for a variety of reasons well before his "retirement," largely for his on the court attitude. Jordan was a notorious douchebag practically from day #1, and it was awesome.

Mike was, is, and always will be my favorite athlete. In 92? That's before anything came out at all. Playing before the internet was in full effect, social media, cell phones, etc gave him a bigtime pass on a personal level. I agree with Derwood.

But during his run, most everyone WAS a Bulls fan.

Again, the dislike of Jordan/awareness of his douchebaggery was in full effect by then even subtracting any knowledge of his personal life; it was no secret how much of a domineering and arrogant he was to his opponents and his teammates.

The Jordan Rules came out within months of the Dream Team, and it's not like that stuff came out of nowhere.

I was gonna bring up the Jordan Rules. I think a lot of us are remembering what we thought of MJ as young kids growing up Bulls fans. There are a lot of people who didn't like him.

I think there is a chance if LeBron can reel off a few in a row a lot of people will become Heat fans. His game is such a joy to watch.

I was in college from '92-'96, and pretty much everyone worshipped the guy (including me)

Wait, The Jordan Rules came out almost a year BEFORE the Dream Team, so get the [expletive] out of here with this "nobody knew anything" crap. Edited by Sammy Sofa
