Sczcur 2/4 with 2 BB's and a SB in the regularly scheduled game. He's close to having as many walks as strikeouts.

Amaya continues to tear it up for Boise. Candelario 1/4.

A few more days of production and he'll have two straight months of over .900 ops. Tough to just call it a hot streak at this point.

Doubters! :)

Last eight games for Vitters:

30 AB / 15 H

2 K / 0 BB

3 2B

3 HR

.500/.500+/.900/1.400+

Yep, cumulatively. He's pretty close after the hr today.

Even if he comes up a bit short of .900 for the two months, it'll still be tough to just say he's in a hot streak.

The Jay Jackson bullpen rebirth continues to look very, very interesting.

There was that debate in one of these threads earlier this year, and there's a reason I never gave up on him completely. I don't know his velo now (and I'd be curious to find out what it's been), but the fastball was always there last year and going to the pen could relieve him of some of the mechanical issues that bothered him as a starter.

I'd be really curious to find out reports on how he's looking. Been too busy to pay attention, but the one hope I had with a pen move is that it might allow him to concentrate on the slider. If he can 92-94 with a solid slider, there's still some hope that we can get some value out of him.

do players like him move back into the top 100 after they've fallen out?

Szczur seems to get lost in the discussion of our prospects these days. It's not hard to imagine him as a starting CF for the Cubs in late 2013/start 2014 and addressing a hole at the top of a lineup.

I'd imagine they certainly can when they're only 22

what exactly is szczur's defense like in CF these days?

Last I heard, he was looking fairly good. I've said before that I think Szczur's raw athleticism was a touch over-hyped, but range/arm speed for CF have always been good, and last I heard, he was learning how to read the ball better/take better routes. I don't know if he's a plus CF, but he's looking more and more like ... Brett Gardner with a touch more upside, which ... could be very useful, offensively and defensively.

shouldnt we pull vitters up so he can get his routine half-season of shitty at-bats post promotion out of the way before next year

I would think so, especially given Vitters' age. It might just take a little bit more of an extraordinary year to get more notice again, than just a pretty solid year like Vitters is having.

Thanks for linking. He has such a quick, easy swing. Still holding out hope that he can be a league-average offensive player at 3B in a year or two.

That's a pretty low threshold these days. With his defense, he better be more than average offensively.

At his peak, yes. But in a year or two he will still be quite young and pre-prime.

Naturally, I'm a bit more bullish on that answer. I do believe that Vitters can be an average (+) offensive 3B in 2014. I do also think he'll need significant time in 2013 to make the adjustment to the bigs. And while his defense has improved, he still needs to take strides to become average there.

Assuming he doesn't have any major injuries this year/major regression the rest of the way I would be fine with letting him be the opening day starter or at least come up in May/June (to get the extra year of team control) and just let him struggle/figure out ML pitching. As it was noted earlier, he has always needed a half-full season at every level to adjust and be productive.

And as a side note, I've always been higher on Vitters than some and am right with Tim on the bandwagon.

It probably also doesn't hurt to have a "Consensus Top 5 draft pick" bulletpoint on your resume.
