As in past years, let's have an individual thread to talk about the draft once it commences and Cubs signings once the draft is over. (I started this thread a few hours early since I won't be by a computer when the draft begins and I figured all the links would be useful in one post and place).

The draft starts today at 6 pm CT and can be seen on the MLB Network and at MLB.com. Just the first round and supplemental first round will be today. Rounds 2 – 15 will be tomorrow (starting at 11 am CT) and rounds 16 – 40 will be on Wednesday (starting at 11 am CT). Days 2 and 3 can only be seen on MLB.com.

The Cubs have a bonus pool of $7,933,900 to spend on their 12 picks in

the top 10 rounds.

Pick # 6 $3,250,000

Pick # 43 $1,196,000

Pick # 56 $911,700

Pick # 67 $769,600

Pick # 101 $471,900

Pick # 134 $343,200

Pick # 164 $257,000

Pick # 194 $192,500

Pick # 224 $148,600

Pick # 254 $138,800

Pick # 284 $129,600

Pick # 314 $125,000

Any team that exceeds its bonus pool by 0-5 percent must pay a 75 percent tax on the overage. The penalties escalate, with a 75 percent tax and the loss of a first-round pick for a 5-10 percent overage; a 100 percent tax and the loss of first- and second-rounders for a 10-15 percent overage; and a 100 percent tax and the loss of two first-rounders for an overage of 15 percent or more. Here is the link to all teams’ bonus pools.

Jim Callis' final mock draft has the Cubs picking Albert Almora.

Some teams think Chicago would take Florida high school outfielder Albert Almora if it had the No. 1 overall pick. While that might be a bit of a stretch, the Cubs aren't going to pass him up at No. 6. If they did, it might be for Fried.

Projected Pick: ALBERT ALMORA.

Kevin Goldstein's final mock draft also has the Cubs selecting Albert Almora.

Chicago Cubs ($3.25M): Albert Almora, OF, Mater Academy (FL)

There's really no other names attached to the Cubs at this point. The presence of Correa could create a difficult decision, and there might be some interest in Fried, but they clearly prefer the high school position players.

Keith Law's final mock draft (ESPN Insider) also has the Cubs popping Almora.

Albert Almora, CF, Mater Academy Charter (Hialeah Gardens, Fla.)

It's a toss-up between Almora and Correa here. They're known to be locked in on Almora, but that was based on the assumption that Correa would be gone.

You think that's bad? Look at the Cardinals having to pick behind anyone.

I didn't realize that, they do get the 19th pick as well at least. What kind of broken system/equation is used to figure out where teams draft in the supplemental for losing players, because that's broken?

What are some guys to hope for at 43 and 56?

Pitching, pitching, pitching. Hre's your HS pitching

Extreme Longshot- Zach Eflin

Longshots- Matt Smoral, Lucas Sims, Walker Weickel, Hunter Virant

Picked during our vicinity- Nick Travieso, Shane Watson, Ty Buttrey, Mitch Brown, Walker Buehler, Paul Blackburn, Kyle Twomey, Edwin Diaz

Others worth looking at- Chase DeJong, Duane Underwood, Mitch Gueller, Tyler Pike, Kieran Lovegrove, Cody Poteet

College

Extreme Longshots-Brian Johnson

Longshots- Pierce Johnson, Alex Wood

Picked in our vicinity- Chris Beck, Pat Light, Brandon Kline

Others worth looking at- Sam Selman, Brett Mooneyham, Martin Agosta, Buck Farmer

Didn't include relief pitchers or differentiate between RHP and LHP. But this is basically the group of guys I'm looking at. Left out a couple of soft tossing guys as well, just looked at BA's list real quick and jotted down guys I remember liking something about anyway.

Buck Farmer? Walker Buehler? There are some fantastic names in this draft.

Watching the draft coverage now, just did a little expose and interview with Buxton. Seems like one hell of a talent, but man... he's not much for words.

They also just showed a brief shot of the Cubs' draft room. Seems like more people in there than the entire front office under Hendry.

Harold Reynolds tried to comp Almora to Braun. Talk about wishful thinking.

They always comp based on mechanics and who they look like the most. It's kind of sloppy. That's great, he has a similar swing to Ryan Braun. Charlie Morton changed his mechanics to mimic Roy Halladay and he's not exactly setting the world on fire

Buxton!

Buxton!

I hope there aren't any sharp objects around you when the Astros or Twins take him.

Just wait and see!
