Letter: Hardee's commercial during Cardinals games is pornographic

Baseball, hot dogs, apple pie and pornography. That’s what you’ll get if you watch the St. Louis Cardinals on TV. Every fan I know has remarked on the filthy Hardee’s commercial featuring a nearly nude woman writhing in soap suds. It’s pornography, pure and simple.

A few Sundays ago I sat down with my family after church to watch the Cardinals. When this commercial came on, my 86-year-old mother, almost in tears said, “Why do they have to do this?” My 13-year-old granddaughter hid her face and my 11-year-old grandson was so embarrassed, he didn’t know where to look. My 89-year-old father — who played baseball in the St. Louis Browns organization — apologized “I’m sorry this is on my TV,” as if it were his fault.

Then it came on again, and my mom grabbed for the remote to try to turn the channel. We were all embarrassed. And then it came on again, and I got mad.

I couldn’t help but think of Stan Musial, the standard bearer of the Cardinals and a man of impeccable character. He had to be looking down from heaven with tears in his eyes.

Since then, I’ve called the offices of team owner Bill DeWitt Jr. and president Bill DeWitt III and left five messages. I have not had the courtesy of a return phone call. Unfortunately, Hardee’s money trumps fans' concerns. Maybe thousands need to call the DeWitts. Will they listen?

Texas became the first team mathematically eliminated from playoff contention last night by losing to the Mariners. The Rangers can no longer finish ahead of the A's, Angels or Mariners, and thus can't get a playoff spot.

And Ron Washington resigns

Ron Washington has resigned as Rangers manager for personal reasons, the team announced.

Some stunning news on Friday afternoon. Washington's Rangers have been a disaster this year, but there's nothing any manager could have done about that given all of the team's injuries. We had more of an issue with Washington's in-game decision-making back when the Rangers were winning. It's too early to speculate on what Washington's off-field issues might be, though he did test positive for cocaine in 2009. Tim Bogar will be in the interim manager in his place.

Don't remember that, but I was against extending his contract back in the day.

My 2003 self was ALL ABOUT trading for Lew Ford.

I had to look it up to get the exact number but One Pitch Rich had an ERA+ of 986 after three starts in 2007.
Posted
I don't think I ever recall seeing a starting or reliever pitcher that has this as his ERA+....

549.

I bizarrely remembered that Eckersley's 0.61 ERA was in the 600s in ERA+ (603)

Somewhere in the independent leagues is there a Ben Christensen, Bobby Brownlie, Reuben Quevedo, Sergio Mitre, and Steve Smyth starting 5?

Your National League batting average leader: Ben Revere, at .314, with a .330 OBP.

I guess what I'm saying is Castro actually had a real shot at this the way he'd been hitting.

Through Friday, Reere was 6th in the NL in average, 76th in OBP, and 110th in SLG

He's the poster child for even semi-advanced metrics

Posted
@JeffPassan This is really hard to believe: Victor Martinez is the only player in baseball with an OBP above .400. Recent years: '13: 7. '12: 4. '11: 6
Posted
Using Fangraphs playoff odds, two weeks ago the brewers had 87.9% odds of making the playoffs. After today, those odds are 24.7%, 7th in the NL.

how many guys were OBP'ing over .400 1998-2003

In 99 and 2000 there were 30+, other years in that range looks like around 15-20 a year.

Yup it's because of the way the strike zone has changed. They put in the computers and trained the umps to call the lower strike it completely changed the game. The strike zone is larger now forcing hitters to swing at pitches they didn't before to protect the zone.
