Former Red (and Cub, briefly) Ryan Freel died yesterday, apparently from a self-inflicted gunshot.

Yes, that's what the thread right above this one is about.

Mark Cuban dropped this tidbit on his Reddit AMA today...

Q: Hey Mark, how close did you come to buying the Cubs?

A: not close at all. When I couldnt get the owner of the Cubs to sit in a room with me that pretty much told me it wasnt going to happen. I never made a final formal bid

So my dad, who used to be about as old school as you can get (two years ago he thought it was a joke that King Felix won the AL Cy because he had a 13-12 record) actually asked me, with an open mind, what WAR was yesterday. I was a little caught off guard.

Heh... I got in an argument with my brother over wins and losses for pitchers. My brother even said "I understand exactly what your saying" and still didn't see the point. We were debating whether or not Samardzija has ace quality stuff. He said "He couldn't even win 10 games last year. If you can't win at least 10 games, you're can't even be considered an ace"

Talking positively about Samardzija raises some serious meatball ire. It's been pretty fun. I'm going to win some money out of this next year.

The dumbest baseball argument ever was between me and my Yankee fan brother. I said that the reason the Yankees won all those WS during the late 90s/ early 2000s was because they had a team full of guys like Bernie Williams that got on base a lot. He said it was because Bernie Williams was clutch.

Apparently the fake to third throw to first move is now a balk.

I just read the same thing.

So how does this work exactly? What happens if the pitcher makes a move to third but doesn't throw the ball, then the runner takes a huge secondary lead and gets caught up between first and second base and runs back to first? The pitcher just has to stand and watch him?

I imagine the umpire has some discretion. Also, I can't remember the last time an MLB pitcher moved towards third that wasn't a fake and spin towards first.

I'm sure it's a judgement call like all balks are. If there's an obvious lag between the fake to third and the throw back to first it won't be called. Though I'm sure if there's a way for a baserunner to exploit the rule we will find out quickly.

If a lefty moves to first and doesn't throw it's a balk. I'm sure it's going to be the same way. If the pitcher moves to third he has to throw it to third and then the third baseman can do whatever he wants with the ball based on what the runner at first does.
