How about the season McCutchen is having? Incredible.

His July numbers are just freaking stupid so far.

Actually if you take out April, his numbers the last 3 months are:

.399/.452/.757/1.209. That's 2/5 of a season's worth of plate appearances, so it's not some little hot streak.

Plus, I have watched a lot of Pirates game the last month or so and he has almost completely stopped swinging and missing at pitches.

Every AB I see from him he makes HARD contact. The homer he hit last night had a wicked sound to it. Like Hamilton-esque. Scary.

His OBP is like .430!

I think he's the run away MVP of the NL if the Pirates even come close to staying in this thing. He has no real help in that lineup either.

Yeah, McCutchen is the runaway MVP candidate. Alvarez hasn't been a great overall hitter, but at least his power has finally shown up and is on pace for 30+ homers. The last time the Pirates had two players hit 30 or more home runs in the same lineup was 2001 when Aramis Ramirez and Brian Giles did it. I honestly thought that the last time it would've happened was Bonds and Bonilla... I was almost right, that was the 2nd to last time it happened, back in 1990. If Alvarez and McCutchen cross 30 homers it will only be the 3rd time in 22 years that two players have homered 30 or more times on the Pirates in a single season.

I umpired LL when I was 18 for like 3 weeks and ended up quitting because both the coaches and parents were horrible. Hated it.

this should probably split into an "experience while coaching/umpiring" thread, but i had a really terrible experience coaching when i asked a pony league team "do you guys suck? i sure don't think so! why are we playing like this!?" you won't believe it, but only the first comment made its way back to the players' parents.

The moral of the story, as always, is don't have kids. But seriously parents who are still trying to live vicariously through their kids athletics (especially pre-HS) suck.

When I was in Kansas City I saw a Royals/Mariners game and was thrilled to find out that Chris Getz' walk-up song is the music from RBI Baseball.

What happened to Ricky Romero? He's been dreadful this year and got killed tonight. He was awesome last year and had a pretty good 2010.

Seems like a good buy low candidate in the offseason if he becomes available.

Z had another segment on "The Franchise" tonight. It dealt with his and Ozzie's return to chicago. Basically just showed both their meetings with the press with Zambrano apologizing, and they showed a clip reel of Z's greatest "hits" in Chicago.

Also a super creepy moment where Z is standing in a locker room and Loria comes to tell him not to worry about coming to Chicago and just to flash his million dollar smile. The creepy part being Z was topless and Loria had his hand on Z's shoulder the whole time.

Anybody else catch this, did I hear this right?

Ozzie: You're my bitch.

Ozzie's wife: [uncomfortable smile]... yeah sometimes.

Ozzie: [puts his arms up in a sort of shrug] You are.

I heard it as bitch the first time, and then rewound and it still sounded like bitch. What a catch.

EDIT: A quick google search and the person that recapped it for the AV Club also heard it that way.

I’m still trying to wrap my brain around the exchange where Ozzie says “You’re my bitch,” and she agrees and high-fives him, but whatever, if it works for them, that’s fine.

So I've been skipping over all this police officer/Carl Crawford stuff, but I read the latest and saw this...

"He was criticizing Crawford for being a bad player, not because he was a black man," Sandulli said.

That's the defense the cop's lawyer is using in an effort to get the guy's job back after being fired for calling Crawford the N-word. That's a real airtight defense.

He didn't call him the N-word.

I thought the whole segment about Ozzie and Ibis was kind of touching, and the "you're my bitch" line was a joke after saying really nice things aobut her. My wife and I both thought it was hilarious.

Also touching was Z's comments about Chicago and how he misses it. I still love that guy.

Yeah I didn't see anything wrong with that "you're my bitch" part either. It was a funny exchange.

Z came off very well last night basically saying "It wasn't the Cubs fault, wasn't Chicago, it was Carlos Zambrano's fault. That's why I'm wearing a Marlins uniform."
