The circus continues...

Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine placed the onus for his strained relationship with Kevin Youkilis on the former Boston infielder Sunday morning.

"I think the comment I made early, he made a big issue out of, and I don't think he ever wanted to get over it," Valentine said in response to a question about Youkilis, who will return to Fenway Park on Monday as a member of the Chicago White Sox, the team to which he was traded June 24.

Valentine was alluding to a comment he made to WHDH-TV's Joe Amorosino on April 15.

"I don't think he's as physically or emotionally into the game as he has been in the past for some reason," Valentine told Amorosino.

Reminds me of the old stories of John McGraw when he played third base. One of his notable things was to sneak up behind and hook his finger in a baserunner's belt as they tagged up at third on a sac fly, thus literally "holding" the runner on base.

He also said that Cub fans were ****ed because he changed the rotation and Z won't be pitching at Wrigley. As if legions of people bought up seats with the expectation that they could let Carlos have it. He's not a well man.

Meanwhile, in the can't-catch-a-break department...

Juan Carlos Oviedo was diagnosed with a sprained ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.

Oviedo suffered the injury while pitching in the minors as he neared the end of his eight-week suspension. It's not clear if he'll attempt to rehab the injury or opt for Tommy John surgery, but he won't be joining the Marlins' bullpen in the near future. The Marlins moved to a closer-by-committee coming out of the All-Star break, but Steve Cishek is the pitcher to own at the moment.

The AL Wild Card race is pretty awesome. Almost every team is still in contention and I hope it stays that way.

Pretty crazy that there are only three teams under .500 in the AL right now, plus only one is at .500. By comparison, three of the five teams in the NL West and three of the six in the NL Central are under .500.

In addition, all the AL wild card hopefuls have come back to the pack in the last 15-20 games, so the second Wild Card leader is Detroit at 4 games over .500.

aaron cook has pitched effectively for the red sox in 5 starts, despite a K rate of 0.62 per 9 innings. he has 2 K's in 29 innings pitched.

His BABIP against is only .248, I would've figured it would be lower with that few K's.

What has Trumbo done to become this good of a hitter? He's always had power but he has pretty much been a one dimensional kind of guy. He's been mashing this season...

.311/.361/.634/.995

Leads the league in slugging. Has he made any significant changes to his swing to make him this good? Or is it an aberration people are expecting to pass eventually?

How about the season McCutchen is having? Incredible.

His July numbers are just freaking stupid so far.

Actually if you take out April, his numbers the last 3 months are:

.399/.452/.757/1.209. That's 2/5 of a season's worth of plate appearances, so it's not some little hot streak.

Plus, I have watched a lot of Pirates game the last month or so and he has almost completely stopped swinging and missing at pitches.
