All I've been trying to say here is that a professional athlete, especially one in the age of Twitter and who has knowingly been on the trade block for weeks (if not months), comes off a bit silly to me if they're upset the media broke a trade involving them before the GM's could get to them with it. This happens all the time and is the new norm. Dempster, if anything, has had more forewarning than most athletes get.

That said this argument is a bit ridiculous as we don't even know if that's the actual hold up to begin with.

Actually, we know what the "hold up" is.

You're assuming that you know an awful lot of behind the scenes details.

I think it's reasonable to assume that a FO consisting of Jed and Theo talked to Ryan prior to beginning any trade discussions.

I really don't recall the Lee situation being anywhere near similar to this, but maybe I'm wrong (the situation being that the player showed up to work and was surprised to find out about a trade before hearing from the FO). Off the top, wasn't the trade made after deadline, off waivers? So, wouldn't Lee have had some time to know that it was Atlanta?

Even if Lee was similar to this and my memory is slipping, perhaps instead of saying the same vitriol/anger (and was there really ... anger/disappointment on Lee ... I really don't recall that) should be shown Dempster, perhaps we should be saying shame on those fans that were showing anger/disappointment towards Lee. Dempster showed up at work and found out about a trade before hearing from his bosses. That's unsettling, even if you are prepared for it. He earned the 10/5 rights, so he has the power to make that decision. It's been one day, and there's been no indication that he won't take a deal

Add in the dynamic with his child, and let's give him more than a day. If I had a situation with a child like that, it'd take me some time to think about making a change, even if it was for a couple months. It still feels like he's going to take a deal. Let's be patient (and I'm aware most of us are).

Maybe if he spent less time doing Haray Caray impersonations, he'd be more ready for the trade.

He was supposedly taking a nap yesterday afternoon when this trade talk was happening. I think you're on to something here.

All we're saying is that those that are bent out of shape about a less than 24 hour delay come off as a bit silly, when there's been no trade rejection. Athletes in control of where and when they want to be traded/signed is the new norm, especially in the age of Twitter. Dempster, if anything, is handling this much better than some other high profile trades that have been attempted in major sports recently.

Impression of Will Ferrell doing an impression of Harry Caray, at best.

Well yea, actually getting upset over it would be kind of dumb.

If the trade wasn't leaked I bet the conversation between Demp and FO would have been something like: "Ryan we got a deal in place with Atlanta, they really want you to help them get into playoffs. They would like to know tomorrow so please discuss with your family tonight and let us know tomorrow."

Discussion with family:

Pros

Might get into playoffs.

Cons

Atlanta is no Chicago

Fans not as good

Will be living out of hotel for a few months and be separated from family once school starts.

No increase in pay, that is a tough call.

If it wasnt leaked we wouldn't know til today anyway.

I would be very surprised if that came into his thought process at all.

I'd also be surprised if he hadn't thought about those other things long before a deal was presented to him.

Both of these. And all told, Dempster seems to be the rare player that has also seriously taken the Cubs' best interests into account.

@crimsonwave1973 Braves still seem confident he will agree today. As Fredi said yestererday "We're in a holding pattern."

Even if they didn't discuss this particular trade at this particular time there have been rumors flying everywhere, so he must have been pretty well aware that sometime between now and the 31st something was going to go down. He knew that The Dodgers and Braves were front runners. How much of a difference could it make whether it was yesterday or 8 days later? He's said multiple times the past few weeks that he knows how this stuff works and expects to be traded.

Exactly. I'm assuming Jed and Theo went to Dempster a while back and wanted a list of teams he wouldn't use his no trade 10/5 rights on. Ryan is being unreasonable if he provided said list and then wanted to be consulted again prior to the FO actually agreeing to the trade terms.

You're assuming that you know an awful lot of behind the scenes details.

That kind of sounds like what everyone is doing......

Aramis Ramirez and Kerry Wood were both approached about accepting trades, and each declined. Disappointing, but that's just how it works. Dempster supposedly said he would accept a trade, with the Braves as choice 2 behind the Dodgers.

If he blocks it, which I still don't think he will, not only is it not cool but it pretty much suggests that he either won't accept a trade period, or only one to the Dodgers, giving them a [expletive] load of leverage. Of course if it's all about the move to a city, Chicago does have another team, one in contention no less. Too bad they don't possess anything resembling a prospect.

The fact that he snuck in the word "official" suggests that it's very close. Or else it's just a dig at those who reported it long before it was official.
