I was just thinking have we had a good deadline since '04? It didn't really work out, but August 1st was freaking awesome.

'05 was Matt Lawton, right? That was fun.

'06 was Maddux for Izturis (ugh)

'07 and '08 we stood pat

'09 we got Gorzo and Grabow, really a nothing trade, that brought the ridiculous Grabow extension.

'10 Lilly and Theriot for pretty much nothing, I think

'11 we had no GM

was jim edmonds a waiver deal in '08?

It wasn't a deadline move, but it was in the context of dumping major league assets for prospects, that Mark Derosa to the Indians was damn good for us.

If that counts (and it probably shouldn't, because the obvious implication is favorite over-the-top deadline moves) but a big freaking star next to the Sean Marshall fleecing.

A fleecing? I was (and still am) a fan of the move, but Sean Marshall has been really good, Sappelt has been awful, Torreyes has just been OK and Wood's peripherals suggest he's not quite as good as he's been recently.

Wood's peripherals are also excessively weighed down by his first couple starts, 16.2 IP, 8 BB, 6 HR (!), .818 OPS v. 45.1 IP, 16 BB, 2 HR, .623 OPS since. He's not as good as he's been recently, but that's because he's been a sub-2 ERA guy for nearly 50 IP now, the regression still leaves him as a good pitcher.

Man, I was at Harden's first game, and it was insane. He strikes out 10 and leaves after 6 with a 7-0 lead...and the Cubs end up having to win it 8-7 in extras. Marmol wasn't charged with any of the runs, but he was horrendous.

And that was the second best trade of last offseason.

Very true.

I've been wondering about the possibility of re-signing Dempster myself.

At this moment, I think that possibility is small. But, let's see what next week brings.

Not sure if that's what you're also implying, but I think we were both talking about the possibility of re-signing him in the offseason after he's traded, not extending him.

Speak of the devil...

Ryan Dempster told Bob Nightengale of USA Today that he’d be willing to re-sign with the Cubs this coming offseason even if he’s traded this summer. Many teams are interested in Dempster, who can block any trade

Was that the game when Theriot made that really stupid throw into the OF?

Off day today. Hopefully this thing gets done.

"listen, theo, we're ready to do what it takes to get this thing done today, we'll offer what it takes, just hear us out"

"w/e bro, i have to go throw batting practice, try and catch me on an off day"

So much for the off day theory.

Looks like their next off day isn't until next Thursday, so we'll just have to wait until then for a possible trade. I hate this waiting around!

Yup. Looking it up Marmol was actually charged with one of the runs, but he gave up 4 hits and a walk.

A major league source denied a report that the Red Sox are “aggressive in the pursuit of Ryan Dempster.” To the contrary, the source suggested, the Sox have not been pursuing the right-hander actively.

FWIW, Jason Stark said on the radio this morning that if he had to say where Dempster would go he would say the Red Sox, added that it would be a perfect fit for them.

ESPN guys always say either the Red Sox or Yankees, and since the Yankess have really put down the idea of getting Dempster....the Sox are all that's left in that section of the country.

If Dempster got traded to the Red Sox the stories about Dempster being a great clubhouse guy, funny and keeping guys loose and making the clubhouse a less tense atmosphere would be insufferable

Hey, if he wants to sign up for 2/20, or 1/12 with an option, I'll be happy to have our cake and eat it to. If we do put together a contender, he's be great to have on board at a home town price. If we suck again, hopefully he has a repeat season and we trade him for more prospects. And then do the same the following year, until he has nothing left to give. It could be like the popular Shel Silverstein children's story.
