Bowman's quotes about Oduya from the press conference are mind-bloggingly stupid.

He's turning into Stan Hendry.

The good thing about re-signing Oduya is that it should mean Hjalmarsson is gone. There's no way they can possibly tie up that much money to some very mediocre defensemen, right? Oduya and Hjalmarsson are making well over $3 million and Montador is one of the pricier third-pairing defenseman in the entire league.

Yeah but if it's between Hammer and Oduya, I'll take Hammer every day of the week. Sure, the guy provides no offense, but at least he's somewhat sound in his own zone.

if you can get past the eye test- which Hammer tends to fail seemingly all the time- and look at the hockey stats, he's one of the better Hawks defensemen.

Perhaps signing Oduya is the move that paves the way for trading Hammer in a package for the fabled 2C that many people feel is such a glaring hole. So far, Bowman has refused to trade any of his draftees/ young guys but a package of Hammer, Kruger, Saad and perhaps a draft pick for Jordan Staal (who supposedly wants out of Pittsburgh) might work.

Yeah I can tolerate Oduya if a move like that is the end result.

But that reminds me of when Tallon signed Huet assuming he'd be able to trade Bulin.

Those are very different though. The money isn't even close to comparable and the positional scarcity isn't the same. Tallon was hung up on goalies when nobody else was, and he thought he be able to trade his extra one. But people are always on the look out for defensemen and you can always fit multiple defensemen into your roster. There's only room for one starting goalie.

It seems like defensemen are in high demand right now, if the previous trade deadline is any indication.

Even if the Hawks get stuck with Hammer, it's still not a terrible situation. If Saad makes the roster they can afford to overpay their 3rd pairing defensemen for the time being.

all signs point to Lidstrom retiring tomorrow. This makes me very sad.

I was hoping he'd wait until after Suter signed somewhere other than Detroit.

I don't think the Wings need Suter or any other top flight dman as much as they could use another top 6 forward. I don't think Ken Holland sees it my way though.

sun-times is reporting hawks have discussed getting Kane "some help" in response to boozing pictures.

I'm no hockey expert, but a quick look: goals down, assists down, points down, power play goals down.

I'm not going to lay the Hawks' woes at Kane's feet, and I know he's still a young man (would probably be graduating or just graduated from college under normal circumstances), but that trend isn't real good.

I don't think you can only look at the numbers with Kaner, given the position changes he dealt with this season. I'll also give him credit -- he played much more of a two-way game this past season and even showed some toughness.

especially considering he had wrist surgery which gave him virtually no time to practice winning face offs.

I hope the Kings take care of business tonight so teams can start making moves. Not that anything big will happen real soon but nothing really can happen until the cup is raised.

I do not think that much will happen until the draft.

Right and free agency doesn't start until July 1 anyways. I love when free agency starts. Unlike the other sports, there is a huge flurry of signings the first couple days.

Edit: come to think of it, the NFL is like that too but the other 2 sports are spread out more.

I read somewhere that there are probably going to be more teams trading for the bargaining rights to certain players this year than in years past. Not sure what the reasoning was for this.

What's the going rate for the negotiating rights to a player like Parise?

I would think that Parise would get out on the market, he is the most coveted forward and it would make sense for him to not sign. However, I wouldn't mind if the Wings threw a 5th rounder at New Jersey and took a run at him for a couple of weeks before free agency.

my guess would be because there simply aren't a lot of great free agents available and that the teams in search of those actual good players want a better crack at them. kind of have a lot of teams on the verge, i think. NYI and EDM could be on the verge of the playoffs. WSH, CHI, SJS, DET on the verge of being real contenders again (or needing something to STAY a contender).

i think the richards saga last year and the kovalchuk saga a year before could scare teams from FA. i remember the richards show sounding like a complete cluster****. all these teams flying out to NY to his agent's office to pitch him and stuff...just sounded so absurd to me. the kings put together a big video with all the famous LA icons telling Richards how great the fans are and the kind of company he could join if he brought a championship to LA. hilarious stuff. the kovalchuk stuff was pretty well documented, i think. it was even more ridiculous. i would be terrified of free agency if i was a GM in the NHL right now. it gets to be such a distraction where you say, "well we can't sign [player] because we're waiting to see what [other player] does." for instance, the kings ended up settling for alexei ponikarovsky instead of kovalchuk. oopsie.

you look at the kings' success as well...no free agent signings there. only willie mitchell and rob scuderi were free agent pickups. lower key guys. free agency is great for role players, it's awful if you need a star.
