Sounds like a lot of sanctimonious bs to me. You guys would love getting top players, even for a year. Maybe not Smack. He wants all his players to stay at Purdue for 12 years like Robbie Hummel.

Ideally, I'd like a mix of guys like Paul that are good enough to really boost the program but not good enough for early entry and then mix in some of the one and done's.

But preferably the one-and-dones who do more with the "one"s than Richmond.

EDIT: And the "done"s, for that matter.

Depends, is the 1 year guy Josh Selby?

Exactly. I would take Jabari Parker in a heartbeat. Do I want 3-4 guys like that, year in and year out? No.

And Kentucky is pulling in guys who are foreign, suspended for the first half of the year, etc. It's more like an AAU team than a university.

But quite honestly, I'm sure Kentucky fans don't care. I've been around enough of them to know that they basically = Alabama football fans.

No, not everyone wants college basketball to be pro basketball. Hasn't your boy Self even publicly stated he doesn't like the rule?

Why would a coach like the rule? He'd much rather have the player for 2 years than 1.

Well, without the rule, he might have the player for zero years. I'm pretty sure Coach Cal likes the rule though.

I'm sure with the amount of success UK has had I'd find ways to cope, but Calipari is a pretty extreme example. Even in pro sports you don't see turnover like UK has had since he took over, and college sports have more "experiential" association built in for most people.

He's also stated he wants the players paid. I think he's even getting tired of cal and his shades of grey.

I get that the system is screwy and one-and-done players cheapen the sanctity of collegiate athletics. But, If you watched Kentucky last year and wouldn't trade your favorite school's roster for that one you are lying.

Also, why would a non-fan of whatever team Calipari is coaching be upset that his mercenaries leave for the NBA?

Because then they'd get some of that talent? Those kids aren't gonna go sit on the bench at Kentucky behind the other kids that are staying.

I maybe in the minority here as well, but I'd prefer the'05 type team we had to what UK had last year. Yeah wedding win it all, but we came very close and we saw those kids grow up together. Thus to me the jourey was very rewarding. Watching Deron stick a dagger in Arizona was showing quite bit of growth from the kid who as a freshman clanked two free throws to lose a game against Memphis. It's very rewarding to see kids grow up.

I get that, and your first point was an angle I didn't consider, mostly because Missouri would never get someone of that caliber. However, I do think guys who are clearly so far ahead of the curve that they would otherwise make a mockery of college competition should go as soon as possible.

If a guy is going to be a lottery pick they need to go. That said too many guys are one and done and still have huge holes in their game they need to be working on. My issue with Cal is he's not really helping those kids, he can't because he has to force them out to keep the next wave coming in.

Agree as well. It's fun to see good players become very good players & quality people. I think it would be weird if all the time I was like "He went to Illinois" to my girlfriend/family/friends for all these guys in the NBA that went there for 1 year.

It would depend on the group. Like I said, I'd trade four years of a lot of guys for last season's Kentucky team.

I know what you're saying. And if it happened to fall that way one year, so be it. I'm thinking more about the long term approach of a program.

Great, well it's unlikely to happen for any team other than Kentucky. Cal's turned it into his brand and has his pick of the litter most years. I just don't see the enjoyment in blowing up a team every year.

Which in a ways a good thing. It's good to have villains, I guess.

no doubt we'd love to have some elite talent. but really the only way to compete with the kentuckys and kansas's of the world is to get and develop 4-star players.

illinois is the most experienced team in the conference, and i have to think that will pay off throughout the year. they've also been to the pit of despair and had a taste of the dog-[expletive]. that that builds character.

They are definitely going to upset a couple of higher ranked teams at home as well as lose to a couple of also-rans on the road. Life in the Big Ten.

Kansas gets elite talent? They've put nothing but bad role players in the NBA since Pierce.

KU gets great college players, but we don't recruit like UK, UNC, Duke and even OSU. Most of our guys are 3-4 year players.

But, If you watched Kentucky last year and wouldn't trade your favorite school's roster for that one you are lying.

Then you're a soulless cynic (and, if I'm calling you that, it's saying something). Kentucky had the best players and the best team last year, and won the title. So, ends-justify-the-means, zero-sum perspective, no one should trade their team's roster for UK's. I'm sure it was fun watching Anthony Davis, et al, come in awesome players and leave awesome players.

But, for me, I would not have traded that for watching players like Verdell Jones, Matt Roth, and Tom Pritchard come in to a decimated program and win six, ten, and twelve games, then win twenty-seven games and play in the Sweet Sixteen (albeit not Jones, who was hurt). This,

which is my favorite sporting event I've ever attended, would not have had the same import. Last year was not the best IU team I've rooted for, but it was probably my co-favorite.

Also, I believe the Purdue fans that enjoyed Robbie Hummel's injury come-back and the Illinois fans that enjoyed Deron Williams' development when they say the same thing.
