He's also making Devin Mesoraco the primary backup to Ryan Hanigan, it would seem

Yes. Bench your #1 prospect instead of giving him AB's in the minors, Dusty. That sounds about par for the course. Although you can put some blame on Jocketty for that, too.

The third most important thing in life is a strong bench.

there's no way Dusty can be making these decisions without Jocketty's involvement.

The fourth most important thing: a poop free dugout.

More important to doing a good job: poop free dugout or poop free pants?

Chapman won't be a starter. No way he would be able to throw 100+ miles per hour as a starter.

Because throwing 100+ MPH is a prerequisite to be a effective major league starting pitcher.....

Enjoyed this one over morning coffee.

In the clubhouse, Baker hits the right notes. Between the lines, it's often a different tune.

Start with his lineup cards. Baker keeps batting Zack Cozart at the top though (a) the former Ole Miss star is a rookie and (b) a streaky one at that. The shortstop singled in the eighth inning Wednesday to snap an 0-for-19 streak. His on-base percentage is below .300.

The Baker book says speed goes on top, however. Thus Cozart and Drew Stubbs bat 1-2, while Todd Frazier and Ryan Hanigan bat in the bottom third. Frazier owns a .329 on-base percentage. Hanigan is at .361.

The Baker book says bunt with runners on base. Time and score rarely matter. At least one home run has been hit in 65 straight games at Great American Ballpark. Yet, Baker keeps playing small ball.

Then there's the pitching moves. Sunday, Mike Leake pitched eight innings of stellar, two-run baseball against Minnesota. He threw just 86 pitches. Didn't matter. In came Aroldis Chapman for the ninth. "That's his job," Baker said.

Never mind Chapman had struggled mightily his last six outings. Those continued. Josh Willingham timed a fireball and sent it deep for a two-run game-winning homer.

At least Billy Hamilton can draw a walk. If Dusty is still around by the time he's called up then he'll at least have a guy who CAN get on base at the top of the order.

I bet dusty wishes he could call up Hamilton right now. All that speed, dude.

I like how LaRussa acknowledges Hill, who has been the best 2B in the NL all year, as someone who might deserve it more than Phillips.

Uggla: .234/.361/.409/.770 11HR 43RBI (Starter)

Altuve: .304/.347/.444/.791 5HR 23RBI 12SB (Reserve)

Phillips: .283/.327/.441/.768 10HR 46RBI 4SB (Pissy McPisspants)

Hill: .300/.359/.512/.871 11HR 38RBI 7SB (HEY GUYS LOOK AT ME LOOK AT WHAT I'M DOING!)

You'd do the same thing tlr did? Why?

For starters, anything that gets Dusty's panties in a bunch is a plus, though it comes at the hands of LaRussa. Secondly, Phillips and Cueto were pretty key players in the brawl that knocked LaRue into retirement (though it could easily be argued he should have hung up the spikes years ago). So yes, if I was LaRussa, I would still hold a grudge.

Phillips has no argument to be included (or at least, not a persuasive one). But Cueto should have been included and TLR should stop acting like such a brat. Even after he retires he annoys me with his petty bs.

I wish LaRussa would just cop to it and say "yea, that's right, I didn't choose Cueto because he's a punkass [expletive] who kicked my player in the head and forced him into retirement." I'd respect him a lot more for that. But this "he's pitching on Sunday" stuff is weak-sauce, especially considering it's not an allowable reason to pass a pitcher over for the ASG.

The Phillips argument is a joke. The guy is WAY overrated here in Cincy. Even dopey Reds fans here are realizing his offensive numbers are pedestrian and are resorting to repeating the "gold glove second baseman" line ad-nauseum.

How awful is it that Todd Frazier (.279/.348/.568) has to split time with Scott Rolen and his .562 OPS?

Dusty on putting a guy with a .287 OBP back in the leadoff spot

“That’s an alarming stat that Stubbs has going. When he scores a run, we’re like something ridiculous like 32-2? Got to do what you got to do.”
