Andrew Baggarly of CSNBayArea.com reports that the Giants have agreed to terms on a five-year contract extension with right-hander Matt Cain.

The deal is worth $112.5 million guaranteed and also carries a vesting option for 2018. Cain, 27, registered a dominant 2.88 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 179/63 K/BB ratio in 221 2/3 innings last season. He's one of the best right-handed starters in baseball, and is now being paid like it. It sure looks like a win-win for both the Giants and Cain.

Good for them. Cain is someone I expect will be solid enough to justify that kind of commitment, and he loves pitching in their home park. I actually thought he was more vital for them to extend than Lincecum himself due to his more durable frame.

Guy is an anchor in their rotation the perfect compliment to whichever young ace they lock up.

The good thing about passing on all the available free agents this year is that there will be plenty of them available every year for the next decade.

it's fine, we're going to sign matt kemp and joey votto

The price of getting Theo was giving him a few years of not trying to help him wind down from the pressures of Boston.

Exactly. We'll have Cain, Votto, Kemp, and then some on the FA market. No reason to go after elite FAs this offseason.

This is what I have been worried about. All of the top FAs will either be extended before reaching free agency or the big market team that sat out this offseason (Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers, etc.) will be driving up the price for the players we want.

Dont be scared to play with the big boys.

this is why, when a big talent guy reaches FA, people end up overpaying. the alternative is trading very good prospects for a small market team's impending FA (red sox for adrian gonzalez; tigers for miggy cabrera) and then signing them to a big contract anyway. and if a guy like pujols or fielder does reach FA there are loads of teams in the bidding. if you hold to not trading top prospects and not overpaying, you'll never get any good players.

The problem with playing with the big boys is that they can concentrate of filling 1-2 holes, while we have a ton of holes to fill.

Yeah you're sounding scared/overwhelmed...Can't think like that when you're chasing a prize you really want. Cubs have the money, the management, the market, a built in pitch....

It's not like the Dodgers are some great roster either...they have two studs and then shrugs. Who's in that FO that should intimidate?

Yeah, I really don't get the argument that it's better to give up a huge contract and a group of really good prospects rather than give up a huge contract and nothing else.

Are we still bitching about this even after every worthwhile FA got a ridiculous contract?

I mean, I'm not trying to say its stupid......actually, yeah, it is pretty god damn stupid.

There comes a point in time when you have to ask yourself, if every single one of them gets a ridiculous contract, what defines ridiculous?

Bet no one is pissed when the Cubs find someone worth joining that bunch.

No there does not. 10 years to a 32 year old and 9 years to a fatass is ridiculous 10 times out of 10.

While fans of those teams are wondering if they might win the World Series this season, the most interesting thing about the Cubs will be hoping that some guys in extended spring training show enough to get to Boise.

Pre-Rizzo trade, I'd have been fine with the Pujols deal.

Yep. Darvish and Wilson(even more than the hometown discount he got) too. Fielder, not so much.

No. There is no objectively ridiculous contract. It's how the contract compares to what the market is dictating at the time.
