oh. my point wasn't that anthopoulos isn't someone you don't want to deal with, just that he's less likely to be a moron and give up way too much in a deal, because he seems pretty sharp overall.

According to a Tween by BN/the guy who made the above post, in addition to Byrd, the Cubs are getting calls on Garza, Soto, Wells, Baker, and DeWitt. I say get whatever we can for the last 3.

I'd prefer to keep Garza unless the prospects coming back are blue-chip. Soto and Wells might be able to warrant a good prospect or two.

Definitely agree on Garza and Soto, both of whom have real value. The other 3 are just worth whatever a team looking to fill a hole is willing to give up.

However, I don't know how many "blue chip" prospects Garza is going to bring in. Thinking back a few months, when people were asking for Turner, Castelannos, and one of Smyley or Crosby, I'll admit I was sucked in, but in reality, something more like Drabek, Alvarez, and Snider from Toronto sounds more realistic. Maybe replace Snider with Gose if the Jays were desperate, and even then we might end up tossing in a minor piece.

As for Soto, I still think TB , who are still in the hunt for a starting carcher would be the perfect spot, although their once plentiful farm isn't what it once was. I wonder if Soto and Byrd for Upton would be a possibility.

Would pass on that Jays deal ten times out of ten.

Would also gladly take eithe Upton brother...BJ is underrated as all heck too....one of the best defensive CFs out there and his bat probably would welcome leaving the Tropdump.

Source:Red Sox closing in on deal for Cubs OF Marlon Byrd.

Now Campana being called up makes sense.

Isn't Cafardo one of the mouthpieces for the Red Sox? I'm almost positive he's the one who kept claiming that the Cubs were the ones who broke their promises regarding the Theo compensation.

Oh yeah, he's their biggest whiner. But, this type of move wouldn't surprise me in the least. I'd rather receive a prospect or two, but my gut tells me this is for a relief pitcher.

My guess is Bowden is the return and we pay most of Byrd's deal.

I'll be happy if the Cubs get Bowden and save a couple million. Seems fair-ish.

Nothing new really, but here's Rotoworld weighing in:

Nick Cafardo of The Boston Globe reports the Red Sox are ''close'' to acquiring OF Marlon Byrd.

The Red Sox are looking for an upgrade in center field with Jacoby Ellsbury (shoulder) and Carl Crawford (wrist) sidelined. It's not yet known how much, if any, of Byrd's $6.5 million salary the Cubs are willing to cover, but a deal between the two sides now seems likely to get done. Byrd is in the final season of a three-year, $15 million contract signed in 2010.

Sitting w/ @ESPNBruceLevine in press box, he says that Byrd deal will likely happen today, apparently for a LH reliever & minor leaguer

Sounds like Not-Bowden and a prospect.

Franklin Morales, Justin Thomas, and Andrew Miller are the only LH relievers above AA.

Looking forward to being asked about the prospect(s) the Cubs get from Boston for Marlon Byrd. Hint: Not Good.

KGold with the preemptive dismissiveness.

I'd take either one of Morales or Miller...especially Miller, who I think would be an excellent project for the coaching staff to take on. He's healthier than Gorz was when we picked him up, and at least as talented (really selling him short since Gorz had already torn his shoulder up)...THAT would be the type of deal I expect from an Epstein/McLeod front office. Boston did alot of work on Miller's mechanics last year and personally I liked what I saw, but since it was the early stages there were, of course, bumps.

When you're guy has a .071 BA and a .149 OPS you ain't getting a blue chipper.

I was thinking the same thing about Miller... but he has been worth 4 wins under replacement for his career.

Oh yeah, he's sucked. That said, he's huge, left handed, hard throwing, and athletic enough that he stayed healthy through a pretty radical mechanical overhaul. Even in his late 20's its an interesting gamble, particularly since he was such a touted prospect.

*Note: This is all relatively speaking...relative to what Byrd "should" get...which is next to nothing. Morales would be similarly interesting.
