This sounds incredibly painful and awful and terrible and horrible.

TAMPA, Fla. -- New York Yankees relief pitcher Joba Chamberlain suffered an open dislocation of his right ankle while playing with his son on Thursday.

"As we understand, they were at, they have these kids places where you jump on trampolines and stuff like that," Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Friday.

Chamberlain had surgery on Thursday night at St. Joseph's Hospital, and is expected to remain in the hospital for several days for the injury, which resulted in an open flesh wound around the ankle. Manager Joe Girardi was at the hospital early Friday morning.

There was no timetable for Chamberlain's return, but Cashman labeled it a "significant injury." Chamberlain was already working his way back from Tommy John surgery last June.

An ankle dislocation that causes an open flesh wound?

great googily moogily

Joba Chamberlain lost so much blood Thursday when he hurt his ankle while playing with his son that there initially was concern for his life, a Yankees' source said.

Chamberlain's son, Karter, who is five years old, was unhurt, Cashman said. When Chamberlain was hurt, bone was sticking out of his ankle and he was bleeding profusely, a team source said. Paramedics were called and Chamberlain was taken by ambulance to the hospital.

How the [expletive] was he a dope? He was playing with his kid

On a trampoline or bouncy house or whatever. It's doing something potentially dangerous that could put you at injury risk.

And why does a fatass like Joba think he should be on ANY trampoline?

Yeah, it's not very realistic to think people won't have fun with their kids in the offseason, including a trampoline, or a climbing wall, or any number of other things that could conceivably cause an injury.

I've been on many trampolines. Not one time was there ever a thought that something like this would happen. Not even remotely.

This is a freak accident. And that's it.

do not GIS this. He essentially ripped his foot off.

why is there even a photo of it?

Not of his personal injury just of the injury in general. I made the mistake of googling it and yeah his foot quite literally almost came off. His career is over.

Yeah if he can come back and be able to pitch (even pitch at a ML level) after that it'll be a miracle.

Wow, those images are worse than I was expecting. Yeah, he'll be lucky to ever walk right again, let alone be able to pitch effectively.

Like Luke Skywalker almost did, Joba has become his father?

Seriously though that sucks.

Except less sawing and more like ripping a chicken leg off a rotisserie. But yeah.
