Does anyone know how long we must leave Jackson in AAA to delay his free agency by a year? I believe it's only a few weeks, correct?

And for that matter, how long must we leave Rizzo in AAA to delay his free agency? I'm assuming we'll need to leave Rizzo in AAA for a longer period of time since he already accumulated some service time in San Diego last season.

I think there might have been some changes in the new CBA about guys having FA delayed through super 2 and what not. But I think it used to be around sometime in June.

Are you saying June for Rizzo or Jackson? Theoretically it's only 10 days in the minors to start the year to delay FA unless that changed in the new CBA. I'm not sure how many service days Rizzo accumulated last year, but it would be that + 10 for him.

According to Baseball Reference, Rizzo has accumulated 68 service days. So unless the new CBA has changed the free agency rules, we should be able to delay his free agency by keeping him in AAA for 78 days.

I didn't know it was only 10 days, maybe I confused the super 2 thing and delaying FA. But that's good to hear. I almost positive there were some slight tweaks to how delaying FA works.

Brett Jackson still not good enough for Sveum's team.

Is he blind?

While Sveum conceded Jackson is major-league ready, he reiterated there is no spot on the roster for him. Jackson will be sent to Triple-A Iowa to start the season.

“I don’t see that opportunity, the way the roster is configured,” he said. “You don’t want the guy to sit on the bench. He needs to go play still. Unfortunately, there’s not really an opening right now for that to happen. You’ve still got to remember that developing is just as important as anything else.

I think we need to find a taker for Byrd for whatever we can get. I know we want veterans to set good examples and all that, but I'd hate to see Jackson, Sappelt or Szczur not get a chance to establish themselves right away.

The most important thing is that Brett Jackson needs to be on the 2012 opening day roster, nothing else matters.

I'd hate to see Brett Jackson give away a year of free agency or Matt Szczur hit 160/200/220

If we're supposed to be building asset value, then we need to be taking guys like them and getting them established in the major leagues. If all they do is play in AAA, they build no trade value and don't improve as hitters.

That's true, no AAA player has ever been traded for anything worth having.

Byrd's trade value is never going to be significant, and he's got just as much of a chance of tanking it as he does of improving it.

It just seems a little wasteful. All three of those guys, and maybe even four with Campana, have long-term potential that can be maximized by doing what's best for their development (putting them in the appropriate level of competition). Soriano definitely has more potential trade value than Byrd, and I'd say Dejesus has a lot more potential trade value as well.

Byrd just looks like the obvious odd man out to me. He's a one-year placeholder without a ton of upside at his age

Maybe we should let Szczur play in AA first. Or well at High A

High A? How will he build asset value in Daytona?

Let's just send him down to Boise. I mean, it's all the same thing, he can work on his approach to hitting and his swing no matter where he plays.

Chris Volstad and Travis Wood are not anywhere near the same place on the development curve as Jackson or Szczur.

The only reasonable comparison is Sappelt. And yes, I'd like to see a veteran moved to get Sappelt everyday playing time.

Especially when our DSL 2 team is always so lacking.

Nah. That whole progression of leagues where we move people along levels of ever-increasing difficulty in order to facilitate their development as players? That's pretty much just for show. They all develop the same no matter where we put them.

What's *really* important is trying to showcase a 35-year-old pitcher with a $13 million contract to see if we can convince someone to give us a C+ prospect instead of a C prospect at the deadline for him.

I know. I was just having some fun. Thought the ridiculousness of including Szczur would make it obvious, but apparently not to SSR.

Although Travis Wood's performance today isn't very encouraging. I know spring training numbers mean nothing. Hopefully he's trying to work on new grips or something.

Don't see what that has to do with Jackson.
