Might as well make it an official welcome, especially so we don't have to continue using GR as a name reference.

Jeff is taking over Robert's NC Cubs team.

With that out of the way, commence newbie attacks..........

My entire team is on the trading block. By which I mean I will gladly swap rosters with anyone else.

Sounds like you might be taking ET's path this year. See what prospects, draft picks, and exempt players you can get this year and hope for a better future.

Unfortunately since you are joining us late, most of us have set our rosters already.

Welcome to Roadkill BTW.

Helpful hint: avoid trading with Tim and getting into long arguments with Adam:)

Hints:

1) Everybody thinks their roster sucks when they take over a team. It's partially a product of being a 16-team league without any patsy, and partially a product of having an exempt-heavy roster mindset, especially when your team isn't making the playoffs.

2) Tim wants your first round pick. He just does.

3) It's not out of the realm of possibility to take a team from worst to first in one year.

4) Draft picks are more meaningful than they might seem at first glance. Especially when you're trading for players the other team is going to have to drop for nothing otherwise anyway.

5) There are more people on this board than there are team managers at this time, because occasionally some of us get so overwhelmed with life that we have to drop our teams. Those of us without teams can probably be trusted to help in a more unbiased manner than those of us that currently have teams that are trying to compete.

6) the last person to trade me the #1 pick in the draft won the title that year.

Just sayin'.

I've updated the membership spreadsheet with Jeff's details. Here's the link:

It's secured by address, so if you can't get in, there is one of 2 things going on:

1) I have the wrong email

2) the link above "expires"

Either way, let me know via PM and I'll take care of it.

didn't know this existed... i tried to view it with my gmail address and couldn't, so i sent you a request with that e-mail address. cheers!

I couldn't access it, but mainly because it was asking me for a password for google, and I don't have a password for google.

no, his roster legitimately sucks ass. he basically has no good young exempt players, josh hamilton is his best offensive player and tim hudson his best pitcher. his prospects aren't very good either. i wasn't thrilled with my roster last year, but i was able to acquire halliday before the draft, had starlin castro, gaby sanchez, austin jackson and jaime garcia as exempt players, and had very good prospects like mike trout and julio teheran.

i would assume that with that roster, it's going to be really hard to compete this year without hitting the lottery on a number of mid to late round picks. while i took some abuse for throwing in the towel in may, i was able to turn halladay into shelby miller, jacob turner, jason kipnis, a first round pick and a major league pitcher who turned into a joke (matusz). i added jake peavy via waivers and turned him into paul goldschmidt and a pick, dealt victor martinez for alex avila, john lamb (who blew out his elbow like 4 days later) and a pick, got a third round pick for mike napoli, got a fourth rounder for markakis and pavano, and a sixth rounder for ichiro. a lot of it is fairly minor, but someone like goldschmidt may be quite valuable if he can put up league-average 1B numbers... that's four years of solid production without having to use keeper points. same reason i wanted kipnis in the halladay deal.

as for all the draft picks, guys like napoli, kimbrel, cj wilson, and howie kendrick went in that round. obviously there were some busts, but the point is that there can be good values available in the mid rounds, so if you can draft some players this year and spin them off for picks before the trade deadline, you can really make a stockpile of picks. at one stage i had two first rounders, two 3rds, two 4ths, two 6ths and two 7ths. those can be used to improve your team the next offseason, either by trading for established stars (i used a first and a second to acquire halladay and cliff lee) or just by advancing your draft position so that you end up with more 6th/7th round guys and fewer 10th/11th rounders.

anyway, that's how i went about rebuilding. take it with a grain of salt since i finished last in 2011, but i think my team looks a lot more promising for this year.

Yeah I broke the rules to check out my team. What the [expletive]? I can't promise I'll be fully engaged for too long this year as this is really a pathetic mess for a keeper team. I'll admit to not having the depth of knowledge of prospects outside the cubs org that I had when I had more free time which puts me at a disadvantage, but I don't recognize several 'prospects' on my team. Was this team built to dominate in 2005 and just left unchanged for the sake of nostalgia?

I'm interested in the league but I don't know that I have the time and knowledge to fix this team esp given what appear to be incredibly complex rules (e.g., if there's a max starts # why is there a limit to when you can adjust your roster?). I'dvhave to dig up gems deep in the draft, which is unlikely given that many of you have a hell of a lot more prospect knowledge than I do. And I have no players of value so unless someone wants Hamilton, making a trade for draft picks or prospects isn't likely anyway.

What I'm saying is, don't get pissed if my team isn't fully active in May. Theo himself couldn't turn this [expletive] around in fewer than a couple seasons.

No worries Jeff. I took over a crap team 2 years ago that had made a bunch of trades and went for it all the year before. I had crap prospects and not enough exempt players not to mention no #1 pick in either draft that first year.

When I took over I made some moves to improve for the future and finished 6-16 my first year but was competitive. Last season I finished 16-6 and made it to the title game.

When I took over my roster 3 years ago, the team was totally bereft of talent aside from Dan Haren (best player after that was probably Brian Roberts), and had nobody in the minors. I traded down in the first round for Jason Bay (fresh to the Red Sox), drafted prospects well and turned them into good players, and took advantage of some waiver values to win the league.

The next year, my team got riddled with injuries which I initially tried to fix (thus trading Miller for Cabrera), but eventually just bailed and loaded up on exempt players and prospects. A team lacking in superstars can generally find some good ones in exchange for exempt players and/or prospects, and a team without prospects only needs one good prospect draft to replenish.

yeah, i think it would be hard for him to compete this year, but it's quite easy to turn it around within the time frame of two seasons. the 2000 point cap pretty much mandates that.

obviously there are some dregs in his minor league system (like tim alderson, who was a prospect like 3 years ago), but he can drop all of those guys and get better prospects. among the prospects i added last year (for free) were zach lee, michael choice, matt harvey, randall delgado, jedd gyorko, trevor may and ryan lavarnway. i think all of those guys made BP's top 100. really all it takes is the BA prospect handbook (just pick up the highest-rated guy on some team that isn't already owned) and an eye on some of the BP or BA prospect write-ups.

My thoughts exactly.

Me too.

Dumb Q? Does the exemption apply to guys who are entering their 4th year? So if a guy has 3 years above the limits, he counts going into this year or he doesn't count going into this year?

i.e., Wade Davis. And yes, my team is so bad I'm considering keeping Wade Davis. [expletive] you.

he doesn't count. so rick porcello (3 full seasons) can still be kept this offseason for free, but his points will count next offseason (assuming that he passes 5 starts in 2012).

Sorry for all the questions, but is there a thread or somewhere you can find trades, esp of minor leaguers? I've seen the draft pick trade thread, but wondering if there's info on the other trades.

I'm trying to determine which FA belonged to which team and have some sense of the value of players in trades.
