He has 1 season's worth of innings at 2B scattered across 4 different seasons, most of which were at age 23 and 24.

Wow, Padilla says that Valbuena will make the 25 man roster.

A guy with a solid offensive ceiling but brutal defense? Couldnt we have gone with Cardenas? If he is on the 25, I'm going to guess that LaHair is hurt and some combo of Baker, DeWitt, and Mather will share 1st. Edited by Little Slide Rooter

Too late for some sort of trade possibly? We are playing the Nats, I could see us still working on a Byrd deal with them.

So...then DeWitt won't?

They are pretty redundant.

That said, who am I missing here? Clevenger, Baker, Johnson, and likely Mather are all locks, and DeWitt and Campana are fighting for a spot. Even with Valbuena, that's a 7 man bench, and the only other people who could conceivably make the team are long shots like Sappelt, Cardenas, Amezaga, and Gonzalez(and I'm pretty sure those guys got sent to minor league camp already). It looks like they all make it.

Just caught this on Twittet

@BleacherNation: Trade imminent? Or just sloppiness? RT @ESPNChiCubs Player photos in the stairwell up to the press box include this guy. Campana too. ????

Could be that he either beat out DeWitt or a trade. If its a trade we'll have had to hear about it by the end of the day.

Eh??? There should be 6 guys on the bench, not 7.

I assumed we get some sort of bonus roster spot for employing LaHair.

I thought Campana was already optioned back to AAA.

didn't he tear up the Cubs during interleague in 09?

Good memory. 6 for 14 with 3 HR

yeah that is about the only thing i know about him... never had much major league success but the cubs somehow managed to make him look like a-rod in his prime for one series.

Must suck for guys that were fighting for spots all month only to see a guy off the waiver wire being picked up and announced that he's on the 25 man roster.

... and has hit pretty well at AAA while only being 26 years old...

Where's the cutoff between this and LaHair? :)

Valbuena was courteous enough to start hitting before he was a 27 year old facing the same league for the 5th time. A real gentleman, that Luis.

campana is there, but not on the roster yet, correct. He's insurance against Lahair going to DL, which is a hilarious thought.

Exactly. How is Campana insurance for Lahair???? Who is the everyday 1B if Lahair is DL'd? Baker?

If this Lahair injury is something going to keep him on the DL for a while I wouldn't be opposed to bringing DLee back on a cheap one year deal. We can't stick Baker at only 1B and keep him there, he will still be needed to play 3B/2B and potentially the OF once in a while. Plus it's clear they aren't going to rush Rizzo.

If Baker is playing 1B every day with LaHair on the DL, they have Valbuena, DeWitt, and Mather to back up 2B and 3B, and Johnson, Mather, and Campana to back up the OF. He would play ahead of those guys in some spots, but he's not drawn away from any vital duties by playing 1B. There's no need to bring in an external 1B.

The only thing I know about Luis Valbuena is how much Bruce Drennan disliked him in his epic 2010 Cleveland Indians rant

Valbuena. Ugh. Valbuena, Valbuena, Valbuena....

Is this a big league bench or the heart of the order for the 2013 Newark Bears?
