can't believe he couldn't get a better deal than that, at least multiple years.

all of a sudden a rotation with multiple question marks has become sabathia, kuroda, pineda, burnett, i. nova. who knows where phil hughes fits in at this point.

As I said in the Garza thread, I'm really hoping this forces the hand of another AL power (Tigers, Sox, Jays) and convinces them to overpay for Garza.

the blue jays are an AL power?

I wouldn't be shocked if they were in the WC mix down the stretch, especially if it gets expanded.

jeez i didn't even realize the yankees resigned garcia. so they actually have 7 starters now: sabathia, burnett, garcia, nova, pineda, kuroda, hughes. gotta think hughes will be moved to the pen. they don't really have any needs left except for DH, which they may try to fill with someone like carlos pena. i guess the other possibility is dealing nova for someone who can DH, or for prospects.

Another solid move by the Yankees -- Kuroda should have a real decent season for them. I would have loved the Cubs to get him had we been in a position to win now.

Do we have anything that could net us Phil Hughes?

the better question is whether it's really worth giving up anything of value for phil hughes. he's got 4 years of service time and he sucked last year. at some point potential and former prospect status don't really matter any more.

But the fact that he had 2 successful big league seasons before last year, 1 as a starter and 1 as a reliever should be worth something. Now that the Yanks need a DH, I wonder if we could build a package around Soriano.

Fair enough, what about Marmol? They already have Rivera, Robertson, and Soriano but you can never have too many back end relievers. Maybe kick them Byrd as well as 4th OF. Could be good to add an extra veteran righty with the lefties Granderson and Gardner.

i dunno, aren't there stories out there about the yankees not wanting their payroll to become too bloated? according to cot's their payroll is already $178m, add kuroda that's $188m, and doesn't include raises to russell martin, phil hughes, joba, boone logan, david robertson and brett gardner. that probably puts them over $200m and they still don't have a DH. and andruw jones is already signed as an extra outfielder. don't really see them being interested in much besides a DH.

soriano wouldn't even be league-average as a DH, why would the yankees want him?

I think your wrong here. Im pretty sure his numbers last year put him in the top ten AL dh's. (Im on my phone so i cant tell right now, but take a look)

I was thinking he had more time under team control, but I'd still have some interest as a buy low candidate. He was a mid-2 WAR pitcher in 2009 and 2010 and has a 7.5 K/9 with a 3.18 BB/9 over the course of his career. On the downside, however, that K/9 has been trending downward since it peaked at 10.05.

I wouldn't give one of our better trading chips (Marmol, Demp, Soto) since the time that we'd control him would be so short.

That could be the answer right there. Back to Soriano for Hughes and we pay Sorianos entire salary. That way they get a DH who can at least hit lefties and they don't have to add any additional salary. I'm sure if Hughes were on the block they would get better offers. Probably moot anyway because they'll likely try to move Burnett instead. If they're willing to eat a decent portion of his salary it shouldn't be a problem for them.

There were 16 DHs in the AL who had 300+ PAs last season. Soriano's .325 wOBA would put him tied for 12th with Bobby Abreu.

and there were 14 teams in the american league, so even if he had made the top 10 (which he didn't), that still wouldn't have necessarily meant that he was league average.

Ok but he did have 25hrs and 80rbi thats got to be good for at least league avg amongst the dh's.

The 25 HRs would have put him in the top 5 and the 80 RBIs would have put him 7th out of 16. The problem with going by those stats, though, is that Cashman isn't going to value those stats alone very much. It'd be tough to convince Cashman that a couple of counting stats rate Soriano as above average when other stats so strongly disagree with thsoe.

I think they are pretty content with their pen. Joba will come in around mid-season to lessent he load on Robertson/Rivera. Betances/Baneulos could be up at some point to add to the pen.

Isn't one of the Bs a starter? That gives them further flexibility to move a starter. CC, Pineda, and Nova are theirs for the next several years.

Now another affect if these two acquisitions is what it could do for Edwin Jackson's asking price. With the Yankees now out of the equation I'd have to assume that the 4 year 15-17 mil per is even less likely to happen than it was to begin with.
