Sounds like Colston may well stay put in Nawlins:

Profootballtalk.com reports that the Saints are "working feverishly" to re-sign Marques Colston ahead of Tuesday's free agency period.

Per PFT, Colston "badly" wants to stay with the Saints. That's good, because New Orleans is working with less than $7 million in cap space and can't afford to give him a whole lot of first-year money, aside from a prorated signing bonus. Colston, arguably the second best receiver eligible for free agency, is more valued in the Saints' offense than he might be elsewhere as a big-bodied matchup problem in the slot. He'd be smart to stay in New Orleans.

The WR we add in FA will dictate how we look at the draft moreso than anything else. Other than V-Jax, I don't see a true number one out there. I like Manningham. I like Meachem. Colston is OK, but he evidently is working towards stayong in New Orleans tonight. Wayne is a package with Peyton. I don't want Lloyd or Garcon. I guess having a Laurent Robinson, Doucet, Morgan, Royal, or Simpson would give us a minimal upgrade, but if we spend big elsewhere, I want Manningham oe Meachem, with a 1st rounder spent on WR as well.

Same here. I think that'd be an amazing offseason.

I don't want Manningham at all. I think he'll get too much money and he doesn't really have the potential to be a "go-to" WR. Size doesn't always matter, but when all else is equal...go with size (that's what she said). I'd rather go with Meachem or Morgan, who are over 6'1". Meachem in particular is a very versatile guy. He can run all the underneath stuff, though he stayed outside for the most part with Colston, Graham, Sproles, and Lance Moore in the middle. But he also has the speed and length to take the top off the defense. I'd love to pair him with a guy like Floyd, but I'd even take Wright or Stephen Hill if necessary. Hell, if Nick Perry is there at 19, I'd take Meachem with Sanu, Randle, or Jeffery.

How much do you see Manningham getting? I don't see him getting more than 4/24ish or so. Maybe 12 to 15 guaranteed? I'm OK with that for him.

To reiterate, I don't want Manningham as a 1. But if we spend big on DE or O Line, I would like to see Manningham and a 1st round WR as our starters next year.

manningham would just be a knox replacement.

I dont think the two are equal by any means. I know what you're getting at, that we still wouldnt have a #1 WR. But Manningham, Williams, WR in 1st (or 2nd) makes us better then where we were last year.

Well, tomorrow is going to be interesting. We've been mentioned with just about every big name out there, so hopefully we have a good plan and get multiple holes filled. It'd be cool to get Mario, V-Jax, or God forbid.....Both.

I expect that crassness from them, davell, but from you it's just disappointing.

I'm gonna go ahead and say it: I'd rather target the WR first.

Cutler is in his prime. We need to maximize that opportunity now, or risk forever losing it. Yes, I would be happy with Mario. Anyone would.

But we need to secure our franchise QB with a target. Once and for all, we need to establish a damn passing game of note in this town. There may not be another opportunity to do that as good as this year ever again. This is the year to grab a top-flight WR. Either through FA or draft. We need to do this now.

We can add a second tier WR though, like a Manningham and still get Williams. And draft a WR in the 1st, if we like someone enough.

And if we don't like someone enough, or our guy is gone, then poof.

So don't go for Williams on the chances we don't get a shot at a WR we like in the first round?

Obviously it depends on a number of factors, but I would target VJax first and foremost.

Disagree. Mario Williams would have a bigger impact on the team than Vincent Jackson.

Plus, Jackson isn't elite but will garner elite money and you have to be concerned about how he will age.

Exactly how I feel.

There's no way we could afford both, correct? Or even if we could it wouldnt be a good allocation of funds to blow it on two players, even if they are very good ones.

Also, has anyone heard anything about Forte since he got tagged? I am assuming the plan is still to negotiate a long term contract this offseason, correct?

Don't recall if I was listening to Zaidman or Dickerson the other day, but they were saying that they are basically so far apart that they can't get to the nitty gritty in terms of negotiating and compromising and all that. That's just fine with me.

Forte is getting bad advice. And he got really bad advice when he turned down the Bears' offer prior to last season.

The last I read was we were still negotiating with Forte. As for signing both those guys, I said a few days ago it wasn't possible. But if we do wind up cutting Barber and cut Spencer and Spaeth, my guess is we'd be a restructure or two from being able to make it happen. We'd just be done with FA and have to be able to get a few of our own guys back very cheap and rely on the draft to produce 5 or 6 guys that are good enough to be on the active roster every week.

Updating rumors of the Bears' competition:

Bills are supposedly a "dark horse" for VJax.

Seahawks are in on Mario Williams.
