This will not affect the Redskins going after V-Jax at all. The 36 mill can be spread out over 2 years and they'll spend as much as they can this year. If anything, they'll go after V-Jax even harder. They are that dumb.

so they're going to go all out and try to win the super bowl with a rookie quarterback and then cut every player on their team except jackson and rgIII?

I have no idea how Washington's financial structure is, but it seems like cutting $36 million in salary during one offseason is basically suicide. $36 million is close to 30% of the cap this year. Going into the season with a rookie QB, do you think Washington thinks this year is the year to "go for it"? Are they sure the pieces are in place? Because if they aren't, and Washington doesnt get to the SB or even make the playoffs, its going be a huge disaster for them, and they will have to gut a significant portion of the team.

If the Redskins were really willing to take the entire hit in 1 season, I'd guess it would be this season, so they can let Griffin play under low expectations and then get him a ton of help next offseason.

Most likely though, they will probably do $18 and $18 or something close to that. Taking that much off their cap space makes it very unlikely that they spend most of it on 1 player, especially considering they just completely gutted their draft.

Edit: I should say that gutting their draft is both a good thing and a bad thing given this news. It's a good thing because they will have more money to spend for FAs given that they don't have to spend the money on draft picks, but its obviously a bad thing because they will have a difficult time splurging on 1 premier player in FA, without the ability to upgrade the team via the draft as well. The Redskins are better than their record last year, but I don't think there's a chance in hell that they are 1-2 players away from competing for the Super Bowl.

They still have a first round draft pick this year, so they still have to put out some big money in the draft. RG3 is gonna need a big contract to go along with the pressure Washington just put on him to be good asap.

he's one of the best talents in any draft in the last 10 years, the redskins mortgaged everything to get him--he's going to want a signing bonus, a huge one.

But don't worry, losing a ton of cap space over the next two seasons won't hinder them at all, you guys.

You guys realize rookies are slotted now right? Griffin is going to get a contract very close to what Von Miller got at 2 last year, which was 4 years and 21 mill. The Redskins most likely wanted to push the trade through, so they could get their franchise QB and still have quite a bit of cash to throw around. As a guy living right in the middle of Redskin country, listening to their beat guys talk, and seeing fans responses, I do think they'll spend this year. They need a weapon for Griffin and they probably would rather get one now, instead of waiting til next year when no one knows who is out there. Not to mention the fact that they are certainly a horribly run organization and will usually make the wrong decision.

Moon Mullin says the Bears are the front runners to sign Mario Williams.

How reliable is Moon Mullin?

I hate asking, but who is Moon Mullin?

Apparently a Bears beat reporter since the late-Ditka era.

it is simply not feasible for them to split it in any other way but 50/50 and still be able to field a 53-man roster next season. they would have to cut a lot of players and restructure others.

the other question is, do they have enough time to figure out what they'll have in regards to cap room by 3 pm tomorrow?

at the very least, they won't be able to blow jackson away with the offer that they were threatening.

They are close to 40 mill under right now, no clue whether they have guys they can cut or restructure, after letting go of Otogwe and Sellers today. I don't know whethet or not they have much coming off their books next year either. Your point about only having a day to figure this out is a great one. I am hopeful this deters them somewhat, but if there is ever a team that makes moves and thinks latwr, it's this bunch. It'll be interesting tomorrow for sure.

Titans were preparing to make run at Houston's Mario Williams, and now organziation has shifted its focus to try to sign Peyton Manning.

Loveeeeee it

It would be really cool to see Urlacher, Tillman, Peppers, and Hester restructure to give us even more room. This is probably the most excited I have been for FA in a long time.

thyey are 31.1 under at this moment, i believe.

edit: ok, didn't realize they made those cuts today. but i don't think that puts them at almost 40 mil.

A "number of NFL sources" tell CSN Chicago that the Bears are considered around the league to be the favorites for free agent Mario Williams as Tuesday's 4PM ET signing period approaches.

The Bears are all systems go in free agency, and Williams would form the NFL's most dominant bookend duo in the league across from Julius Peppers. Ultimately, Chicago may choose between Williams and free agent wideout Vincent Jackson. It sounds like Williams is coach Lovie Smith's priority, and new GM Phil Emery's old team in Kansas City rarely spent big on wide receivers. While the Chargers, Patriots, and Titans have been linked to Williams as well, the Bears may be positioned best to land him. We should find out by midweek.

No, he says the Bears are leading on Mario Williams so I say he's the most accurate beat reporter of all time.
