That's awesome, Lovie, but does Phil agree? And where was this enthusiasm for big WR's the last three seasons? Did Jerry say "no"?

Color me skeptical.

Mike Martz. He wanted "his" type of WRs. He was clearly trying to re-create success from his archaic form of offense. I think he was pushed by the other coaches and Cutler to get a big WR. And the result was to make both happy. Get a 6'2" WR who had success under Martz, Roy Williams.

i still don't understand how the chargers have enough money to tag him a 2nd time

They can pay VJ $14 million if they want, but Norv will still find a way to fail.

Is tagging a guy a second year in a row any different the tagging him the first year? Ie, does it cost a team more?

I do not believe so, they just can't do it a 3rd time I believe.

if they tag him again they have to offer him 120% of his last year's salary. which comes out to nearly 14 mil.

If we do, it just means we'll draft a big WR in the 1st round. My guess is we add a WR thru FA and an early(1st or 2nd rounder) in the draft. Big guy and a little guy. I don't want Royal, but Jay may like him. At any rate, if we DO go after him, he won't be the main receiver addition for us. Don't get me wrong, I want TWO additions better than Royal, but my guess is we were mainly feeling out the agent on Bowe. I'll hope for V-Jax, Stevie, or Manningham, since I think those 3 are the best of the guys I think actually hit the market.(Don't want Colston or Wayne) and draft another guy in the 2nd or 3rd. Hell, I'd take Wright in the 1st to pair with one of those guys personally, to turn an obvious weakness into a real strength. But, if we wait, I'd love to take a chance on Ryan Broyles in the 3rd or 4th. Coming off the injury, I think he'll be a great value type guy and could be a nice complement to a big wideout.

Ryan Broyles? AJ Jenkins is bigger, faster, and better than that guy, plus he's not coming off a major injury.

Jenkins is going to be a thousand-yard guy in the league.

Apparently he's willing give them a discount now. This sucks.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that the Eagles "are listening" to trade offers for DeSean Jackson, who will be franchise tagged before March 5.

The aggressive Eagles, who have become even more so under GM Howie Roseman, are always "listening." In an ideal world, Philly could move on from Jackson and receive a high-round pick in return without having to fork over any monetary compensation. We don't think any team would surrender a first- or second-round pick for Jackson, and that he'll ultimately stay with the Birds.

I wonder what exactly it would take.

PFT says V-Jax's agents are told franchise tag is "improbable". Crennel says it's not "definite" Bowe will be back. Good news for us Bears fans, even though I fully expect Bowe back in KC.

Perfect offseason for me: Extend Forte, keep Okoye and Jennings. Trade 2nd 3rd rounder for Desean(I love the speed at least), sign Mario. Sign Henne to be backup QB. Draft Floyd in 1st, Adams falls to us in 2nd, and take Zeitler in 3rd. Ladarius Green in 4th.

Really doesn't sound like VJax will make it, what with apparently giving SD a discount.

All I've read is Jackson MAY be willing to give them a slight discount on a longterm deal, but the Chargers will wait to see the market set itself. That's great news, in my mind. He'll hit the open market and it's up to us to get him here at that point.

Agree with the re-signs. Don't agree with trading for Jackson, though personally it would be awesome for me to have a Bears player sharing my name and giving up that 3rd wouldn't be much (or accepted by Philly). Mario Williams would be insanely awesome, but not happening. I'd rather spend money on something else other than Henne or any backup QB. Adams in the 2nd would be amazing. Ladarius Green is intriguing, but I don't see him as anything other than a big slot WR. He's has Jimmy Graham's height and athletic ability, but Graham has about 20lbs on him. Don't think Green is an in-line TE. Won't be much of a blocker at sub 240lbs. Will slow him down to have him uncoil out of a 3-pt stance.

i've revised as well:

sign: bowe, mcneil. re-sign: forte, okoye, jennings

draft:

1. Whitney Mercilus DE

2. Orson Charles TE

3. Kevin Zeitler G

3. Sean Spence OLB

4. Shaun Prater CB

5. AJ Jenkins WR

That would be a pretty sick offseason, though I'd go CB 3rd and LB 4th. And Jenkins may not last til the 5th. I also hate the thought of trading Olsen for a 3rd rounder and then drafting a TE in the 2nd round, even though I do understand there was going to be a money issue also. But Charles may be worth it. Big fan of his. Doesn't have the great height of a Grontkowski/Graham, but has really good short area quickness. Also, strong as an ox apparently based on his bench press. Unlike most TEs in this draft, he also lined up on the LOS over 80% of the time. Not a glorified slot WR, not a guy that needs to be off the line to get a clean/quick release into his pattern.

As for the CB/LB thing, I think the Bears could have any of a crapload of CBs in the 3rd round that I'd be happy with. Trumaine Johnson, Brandon Boykin, Josh Norman, Casey Hayward, Coryell Judie, Leonard Johnson, or Ryan Steed. T. Johnson has the size. Norman and Steed are small school potential studs. Judie and Boykin are big time athletes. L. Johnson and Hayward are NFL ready, Hayward in particular is a prototype Cover 2 guy. In the 4th, I think there will be plenty of LB talent left on the board.

Damn, I really like that actually. Mine is not happening, too much has to fall perfectly. That's pretty realistic, if Bowe doesn't hit FA, I'd take V-Jax or Stevie and keep the rest of your offseason in tact. If we have to settle for someone not in that class though, then I've got to take. WR much higher in the draft. Maybe sign John Carlson and take a WR in the 2nd possibly. Or take a WR in the 1st and draft Cam Johnson in the 2nd, still signing Carlson as your TE.

i see your point. i don't know if prater necessarily fits the mold of the cover-2 cb like those other guys you mention. i just really like spence.

i think this is a great draft for what we need, no matter what happens. emery will have to try to mess it up.

i also think we have the inside track on dwayne bowe. i think he wants to sign with us as opposed to kansas city. he knows he could take that next step in chicago with a quarterback like cutler and so does his agent.

what makes you think this?

You guys need to stop getting your hopes up:

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that the Chiefs plan to use the franchise tag on free agent Dwayne Bowe.

This is assuming the sides can't reach a long-term deal, which they almost certainly won't before the March 5 franchise deadline. The wideout tag is worth $9.5 million, and Bowe would cost at least $11 million a year to lock up. One GM told Schefter that he anticipates "as many as" 25 franchise tags being used this offseason, largely because the salary numbers are down across the board.
