I really don't want to see this team throwing big resources at the tight end position.

Me either. Even Jermichael Finley. While having a Jimmy Graham or Rob Grontkowski would be very nice, it's not at all necessary. What people fail to mention about these great TEs is that they play along side 1000 yard WRs. How many TEs are putting up huge numbers with WRs like the Bears who can't put up 600 yards at any spot?

Tony Gonzalez with the Chiefs??? I know he had Derrick Alexander early in his career and Eddie Kennison, but it seems like he was the main weapon on that team. Antonio Gates in his first 5-6 seasons??? I think you can find TEs putting up #s with "not-so-good" WRs...

those offenses have been in overdrive for quite some time.

Yes that's true. Brady always had good #s, but the year Moss came over... Brady threw 7% better, 1,300 yards more, 26 more TDs, 4 less INTs, +30 on his QB rating compared to the year before.

Yes... Pats were very good to great before Moss. The first year he had Moss, they ended up with practically the best passing offense in history. What SpongeWorthy said wasn't wrong- if when talking about Moss.

Now as far as with Pats this year with Gronkowski/Hernandez duo, Brady basically only threw 1,300 more yards compared to the year before. Everything else was close to the same or worse. You can say Pats went on a whole another level like they did with Moss the first year (Brady did end up throwing for 5,200+ yards this year which would've been the NFL record if it wasn't for Brees and is the new AFC record), but they were already great the year before so it's a little, if any, improvement.

Basically Pats with Brady went from very good to great passing offense to AWESOME one year then great since.

I agree not to throw too many resources at TE. That means I wouldn't trade a high pick or throw lots of money at a FA. But it still should be a higher priority than it was the past two years. Kellen Davis has the skillset, but after him its a blocking TE and two undrafted rookies. I think we can get a little better competition than that for Davis.

Hindsight, the Olsen trade wasn't bad (we'll see what he gets as a FA), but was made for all the wrong reasons. I'm glad we have the extra pick, but we should have had a better TE plan than we did.

He signed a 5/25m extension with Carolina. It was a stupid move by the Bears. It's nice that they have an extra 3rd, but if they go out and spend more in free agency or spend a first half of the draft pick on one, it'll be a real shame. Sure, I would like it to be a higher priority than the negative priority it was last season. But there are far bigger needs that would have a more substantial impact on Cutler and the offense than getting a tight end.

In all 11 of Gonzalez's good seasons in KC, he played with a WR that had over 850 yards in every single year. 7 of those 11 he played with a 1000 yard WR. And in 2 of the seasons where the WRs had less than 1000 yards (but over 850), Gonzalez was not the leading WR on the team.

I'll take an impact offensive player at any position to help Jay, just don't overpay/over draft for it.

At this point, I'd overpay/overdraft for an impact player. It's the biggest need on the team. However, like I said before, I don't see TE as that impact position.

Generally I'd agree, but it can be, depending on how you feature it in your offense.

Jeremy Bates, who served as Jay Cutler’s quarterbacks coach during Cutler’s three seasons with the Denver Broncos from 2006-08, has been hired by the Bears to fill the same role.

With Bates as his position coach in 2008, Cutler was voted to the Pro Bowl while setting Broncos passing records for completions (384), attempts (616), yards (4,526) and 300-yard games (8). Cutler was sacked only 11 times while operating an offense that ranked second in the NFL in total yards.

I was starting to warm up to Alex Van Pelt. But Bates works, I guess. Anything that makes Cutler happy works for me.

I really don't know much about the guy but everything about him seems a bigger positive than Van Pelt, at least superficially.

#Bears hire Jeremy Bates as QB coach team announces

Well I'll be. That's a direct contradiction to earlier reports, and moderately positive news if you ask me.

Huh...my reaction exactly. I thought they were saying he was for sure out of it. But if I recall, right after that Cutler had tweeted something like "don't believe everything you read".

So is Bates going to be the "passing game coordinator" then? Or will they hire someone else to pair with Tice?

That's what I wonder as well. My guess is Bates handles it.

PFT says he'll handle the passing game:

The 35-year-old is now back, and he’ll be responsible for the passing game while first-time offensive coordinator Mike Tice handles the running game. It’s unknown who’ll be responsible for booking the bye week booze cruise.

The Bears announced that Bates will coach quarterbacks but their statement made no mention of the passing game coordinator role that previously had been referenced.

Not sure what the reasoning was behind the name. Part of me thinks Tice didn't want a passing game coordinator title under him which could leasen his perceived status as OC. I would guess Tice had to be talked into this hire.

I'm pretty sure Tice is trying to parlay this whole thing into a head coaching job somewhere. So, maybe it's just a title thing. Tice has never been an OC before, so I'd guess he'd want/need some help. I don't know that he would have been opposed to this hire at any point. I think that he and Bates can put their heads together with both having insight on Cutler's strengths and abilities, and come out with something good. Tice will get the bulk of the credit regardless, IMO. Because it's not like Bates is going to get something out of Cutler that he hasn't already shown before. So, whether Bates is passing game coordinator or not, I'm sure he'll have some say-so. I'd imagine they'd both call some plays at some point.

Not sure how it would be perceived, but I think if Tice is OC and there is a QB Coach/Passing Game Coordinator under him with some semblence of a name (and I think Bates qualifies for that), then Tice would not get full credit for any improvement in the offense, at least in the passing game portion of that offense. There are egos involved with these titles and job descriptions. A guy hired to be offensive coordinator wants full OC responsibility and credit.

I do see Tice trying to land a HC gig within a year or two, which is part of the reason why I'm happy that somebody who is at least theoretically qualified to run the full offense is getting this job.
