Football is a one and done game at the end of the season, so if a backup QB has to play that game then he better be decent. We aren't talking about spending money on a backup catcher here. We're talking about spending money on a guy who's going to possibly have to run the entire offense during a playoff game.

There's also no reason to believe that if the Bears defense, special teams and running game are well above average that Jason Campbell couldn't lead them to a Super Bowl. Much crazier things have happened.

There's plenty of reason to believe otherwise because without elite level defense no subpar passing team is going to sniff the super bowl. The Bears defense is nowhere near elite and a Campbell led Bears offense is going to be subpar.

This isn't the 80's where half the SB teams put some schuck out there. If you are using your backup QB you are screwed anyway. The only value a backup is going to have is if you develop him and then trade him for more than you spent on him in the draft. Spending millions on a guy you don't want to play is dumb in a salary cap sport. It doesn't do a damn thing to improve the team and this team needed a hell of a lot to improve on.

It isn't a crapload, but I hate to say it's not a true commitment to winning either. Don't get me wrong, I think we've had an excellent offseason. But, Marshall's cap number could be dropped from 9 to 3, by giving him a bonus. Barber, Spencer, and Spaeth could be cut, saving close to 10 mill more. Plus, Urlacher, Peppers, or whoever else could possibly restructure. As much as I have liked our offseason, we could have added Mario, if those 3 guys were cut, or we turned Marshall's salary into a bonus. If we had added Mario and traded for Marshall, we would have went into 2012 as the favorites in the division.

While I agree with your proposed moves, there's absolutely nothing the Bears could have done this season that would have made them the favorites in the division.

Exactly. Jason Campbell has experience, but hasn't won jack in the NFL.

And contrary to popular belief, QBs DON'T get hurt all the time. Eli Manning has never missed a game in his life. Peyton had never missed a game until he had surgery at 35 years old. Rodgers, Brees, and Brady don't typically miss games (Brees and Brady had 1 major injury each, but missed nothing outside of that; Rodgers has missed 1 start in 4 years). Stafford, Ryan, Smith, and Rivers didn't miss any time. The league is so geared to get the ball out of the QBs hands (unless you're Martz) and protect the QB before and after the ball leaves his hands. RBs, WRs, and OL go down much more often than QBs.

The Bears backup QB situation is overblown because of the timing/result of Cutler's injuries. Had to leave a playoff game. Left a 7-3 team that lost 5 straight without him. That doesn't mean you need a better backup. That means you need a better team around your QB so either A) he doesn't get hurt or B) him getting hurt won't kill you. But because there aren't even 32 good QBs to go around to every team, nobody has a situation where they won't get killed if they lose their QB for more than 2-3 games.

They could've put out a hit on Rodgers.

I don't know about that. Adding 2 of the top 20 players in the NFL would've helped a lot.

It isn't happening, but if we had gotten Mario and Marshall, I think both sides of the ball would have been dramatically improved. I think I would have thought we'd win the division if that was our offseason. I'm not bitching though, because I definitely think we're a playoff team right now, with things we can still do, if they pop up.

Are you counting Marshall as a top 20 NFL player? Besides, the Packers still have far and away the best player in the NFL (and at the most important position). I hate the Packers, but there's no way they're not favored in the division considering they really didn't lose anyone important.

19. Chicago Bears: North Carolina DL Quinton Coples

The Bears love to go defense in round one and getting a talent like Coples in the middle of the first has to be considered a steal. Coples has draw comparisons to Chicago DE Julius Peppers and would make for an intimidating one-two punch off the edge.

LOL. Bears love to go defense in the 1st round...except that their last 4 1st rounders, and 9 of their last 12, have been offensive players.

And those were all under Angelo, not Emery.

But they didn't love doing that.

It's pretty obvious now that the Bears need to go for a defensive end in the first round. Who are your top four pass-rushing ends that the Bears should target? John, Winona, Minn.

The four best defensive ends in the draft that fit the Bears' scheme, in alphabetical order, are Melvin Ingram from South Carolina, Whitney Mercilus from Illinois, Nick Perry from Southern Cal and Courtney Upshaw from Alabama. There is a chance the Bears will have their pick of these four, but I really think there is a good chance Mercilus is off the board at 19. I also think there is a good chance Quinton Coples from North Carolina could be off the board, but I don't see him as the kind of player the Bears will be looking for. Different players will rank these ends in different orders based on their schemes, so we can't be completely sure how they will come off the board.

Sign Andre Carter. Cut Barber, Spaeth, and Spencer. Sign Wallace to frontloaded offer sheet. Draft CB, DE, and O line in rounds 2 to 4, TE and RB in 5 and 6.

I used to like Pompei at one point. Was I insane?

So, did Roger get it out of his system or is he on a suspenion high and ready to go after Marshall?

I think there's a massive difference there. One an unproven off the field accusation that's being pretty vehemently denied.

The other is an in-game program for injuring other players, under a commissioner that has made reducing injury a major focus of his "administration".

There is a massive difference, I was just wondering about how he may be leaning.
