With this many WR's off the board, Wallace for our 1st doesn't sound so bad to me right now. Granted, we'd probably have to structure something that took up most of our available cap room for him.

However, if you could somehow add Wallace and Grubbs through FA, then draft DE, WR, OLB or S with the 2nd and 3rd rounders, I'd still think we had a HELL of an offseason.

If we pull out of this with Mario

That would be a fun defense.

OK, assuming we sign Williams, what would our next step be? who do we draft?

WR/OT/CB/DE depth

I've read that the Bears top 2 targets this offseason were Bowe and Avril. Both got franchised. Went from a pretty strong FA class at WR and DE to a mediocre one, especially if Mario Williams doesn't leave Houston.

Dallas even franchised Anthony Spencer, who was quietly a decent target.

I wouldn't even care about DE depth if the Bears had Mario Williams. Double up on WR early. Throw in OT, CB, LB and go after QBs all day while the offense develops the young talent.

Exactly why I have wanted the Bears to make the move for Wallace all along. The FA WR class is missing some big names. Michael Floyd had a good combine and may go before 19. Vincent Jackson will have teams throwing all kinds of money at him, and will probably be more expensive than Wallace. He's also 4 years older and not as productive.

Wallace, Grubbs, and then DE, WR, CB with the first 3 picks would be ideal.

so are we not bringing one of bowman and jennings back?

i'm beginning to warm to the idea of making a run at wallace. roethlisberger is a similar quarterback to jay--they both like to hold onto the ball and make more time for their receivers to get open, sometimes to their own peril.

i'm down with grubbs, but i'm not cool with moving CW back to LT, so we'd probably be going into camp with Webb as our LT again, which may not be a terrible thing if he's on a short leash, i'll give him another chance.

i'd probably go for cam johnson in the 2nd. then a big CB with our first 3rd and maybe sean spence with our second 3rd. i love AJ Jenkins, so I'm going to talk about him in the 4th, if he's there. then maybe a DT in the 5th.

I'd imagine the Bears would only bring back 1 of Jennings/Graham. Bowman's definitely gone. Even with 1 of those guys you still only have Tillman, DJ Moore, and 1 of Jennings/Graham. The Bears would still actually need 2 CBs.

Mario williams....seriously?? I didn't have Houston Not resigning him. Peppers AND Williams, whoa. Mario williams is amazing, I'd like to have a vjax, but I think Williams is such a better football player. Blow the cap space on Mario, Mario and grubbs.

if the bears were going after Avril how could they not go after Mario...

I agree. Mario is so much better than any unrestrictred free agent out there. You can address OL/WR in the draft and even go after second tier free agents to plug in holes at those positions. That said, I'd rather go Gaither as my #2 target after Mario Williams.

More on VJax:

ESPN's John Clayton agrees with the Chicago Tribune that the Bears are likely to make a "big run" at free agent Vincent Jackson.

The U-T San Diego expects V-Jax to command annual pay in the $10-12 million range across five seasons. Speaking relatively, it's reasonable money for a true difference maker in the passing game. Should the Bears land Jackson, their draft pick at No. 19 overall could be used on an offensive or defensive lineman.

that would be more than reasonable

Also, putting VJax on the Skins would be kind of a waste, assuming they don't get Peyton or trade up in the draft.

yeah, if they want VJ and are offering the same as the bears are, why would he pick washington?

I really don't think they have any concept of how building a football team works there. It seriously comes off like they just look for players a casual football fan would recognize and then give them lots of money.

If it sells tickets, so be it. One could say the same about the cubs for a portion of their existance

Oh I know, but still, they're pretty awful.

If all else is equal I'm sure VJax would choose to play with Cutler. But the Skins may just overpay to tip the scales.

At the Senior Bowl, a source close to Jackson -- pessimistic about his prospects for remaining in San Diego -- said the receiver hoped the Bears would express interest in free agency.

Looks like this has a pretty good chance of happening assuming the Bears will fork out the necessary cash, which they should.

I still might take a WR in the 1st though, depending on who's there when our pick comes up. Bennett/Knox shouldn't be any better than our 3 and 4.

our prom-queen-impregnating, alienzombie-fighting quarterback will make him a 1500-yard guy.

a) Is it possible to sign Mario Williams and also trade the 1st round pick for Wallace? Because I would prefer that to signing VJax.

b) What were VJax's off the field problems?
