i'm starting to lose hope that anyone will be available in FA. even with several teams right up against the cap, they'll still use the franchise tag if the player has value. we're going to have to take a wr in the first and with the day floyd had, it's not looking good for us at 19.

Maybe we should trade up for the first time ever rather than trading down 10 times like we usually do.

I'm starting to think it's never going to happen with this group. The defense is still really good, but they're so reliant on that LB corps and that could careen off a cliff at any moment.

Per Rotoworld,

The Carroll County Times' Aaron Wilson is "hearing" the Bears will be a potential landing spot for free agent LG Ben Grubbs if he is not re-signed by the Ravens.

Grubbs has been expected to reach the open market, but coach John Harbaugh insisted in a radio interview last week that the Ravens were going to "really make a run" at re-signing him. The Bears ended 2011 with former undrafted free agent Edwin Williams at left guard.

I'm guessing this would mean Chris Williams back to LT, which has been a very quiet rumor this offseason.

Grubbs is going to be expensive as hell. Don't get me wrong, he'd help us out for sure, but I'd probably spend that kind of money elsewhere personally. By the way, the comments I've heard from Tice and Lovie, make it seem like Webb is definitely our LT next year. I don't know what a Grubbs signing would mean for Williams.

One thing CW has shown is adaptability. He's building up a nice skillset. Maybe the Bears are thinking along these lines...

Just a thought.

But the Bears also have preached for the last 2 years, they just want to get guys in the same place to get some continuity. I don't know why they would move their best lineman from last year after he struggled for the first 3 years of his career at other positions.

yea, I don't get this unless one of them moves to RG

Stupid Bears winning that last stupid game would have a much better chance at a top WR if they had just lost.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing as soon as Floyd got done running. I doubt we trade up, but I might even advocate trading back 10 spots or so now. If we could get Hill and add another 3rd, I'd be OK with a scenario like that. With 3 3rds, you could address DE, CB, and another WR, to go along with a O-Lineman in the 2nd. That being said, my guess is Floyd running that well and probably putting himself out of reach for us in the 1st just prioritizes WR that much more for us in FA. And if we DO go that route, I could still see us trading back, maybe to get Adams a little later or maybe still take Hill in the late 20's.

Really? It's still 2 months until draft day. I'm not writing Floyd off dropping to our position. Much stranger things have happened.

The Bears have plenty of spaces where they could use 1st round talent. They do not need to be tied into any one player or any one position with that first pick. If a guy like Floyd goes before they pick, there will be something else worth taking. I've been saying for a while that the Bears biggest problem is the fact that they have weaknesses on the line and at receiver. Ideally they solve the line completely and make it a strength while also acquiring top notch receiving talent. But in reality, they can win by simply solidifying one of those groups and make marginal improvements to the other. If the Bears wind up with multiple Earl Bennett type receivers, good and productive, but not dominant, they can still thrive on offense if the line does its job. If they get a top notch pass rusher with the 1st pick and only getting 2nd/3rd round talent (plus a free agent or two) to improve the line and receiving corps, the team should still be in good position, assuming they take the right guys.

it looks like vincent jackson is going to be the guy.

Based on?

i don't mean to say that he's going to be the guy we sign, but our best chance at snagging a true #1 receiver. i'm basing this on the fact that he's the only big name FA that doesn't appear to be getting franchised.

Oh, okay. I didn't know if you were reading things that made him seem a likely aquisition or just what you said here.

Rotowoorld mentions us as a possible destination for Moss. Still don't know what to think about that personally. Peter King said he doesn't think but 2 WR's will go in the 1st round this year. He's not a draft guy, but he's as plugged in as anyone.

While the feeling is mutual that Jackson wants to stay in San Diego and the Bolts want to keep him, the sides don't appear to be making any headway in long-term contract talks. The smart money, for now, is on V-Jax hitting the open market, although that could change suddenly over the next two weeks.

Peter King is a shill. He's plugged in, but he's just a guy NFL people use to spread their own rumors.

I know what I think about Moss, given the Bears situation, I'd be all over it. If you can sign him and another guy, then you can wait until the 3rd of so to get a developmental receiver (another Bennett maybe) and spend the draft picks on the other needs. If the Bears had some rookie QB I'd be concerned about Moss's attitude. But he's got no leverage to be a douche, and if they ever want to cut him, that's not going to be a problem. Take the gamble.

That kind of scenario, I'm OK with signing Moss. Because we're adding another vet and still drafting a guy relatively early as well. What I don't want is for Moss to be the guy we add that "fixes" our WR problem. Adding him and nothing else is a horrible idea.

I think that wright has fallen out of the first, based on his slow forty time. He's a guy that probably shouldn't have run. Floyd will likely be gone, we might as well take Mercilus and look for Charles or Fleener in the second. Given how good AJ Jenkins has done, he May be a 3rd rounder at this point. If we sign Jennings, we might not need a cb, so Zeitler with the other 3rd and then Spence in the 4 th.

I was under the impression Moss was kinda washed up.

He can't be any worse than Roy Williams.

Being better than Roy Williams can't be the standard by which we do anything, ever.

I don't see why the bears couldn't move Grubbs to rg. Bears have a lot of holes and bad holes on the line. Getting talent is what I'm wishing for. Webb sucks, I want a lt drafted higher than the 7th round.

Im all for moss. Shouldn't need a big signing bonus to get him so if he ends up being a total ass they drop him without much cap hit.

If thats true regarding Wright, the Bears should wait till round 2 for WR and get him there, even trading up a bit if needed. 40 time is so overrated. There was talk of Wright sneaking ahead of Blackmon before the combine, so there's something there. The 40 yd dash is more a track event. As long as you have good footwork, which most reports says Wright has (maybe best in the draft) you can make yourself just as fast as a guy with an tenth less second on his 40. And if the other guy slows himself down an extra tenth second with poor footwork you have a 0.2 second swing (in relative terms)

Sure Wright still has some size concerns, but he seems to have the insticts to go to the ball, which can be just as important.

The point of the combine is to see if a player has the basic tools to compete at the next level. Speed is one of those tools for a wr. If you can't run under 4.6, getting open is going to be hard against pro dbs, no matter what your instincts are.
